A few years back I got all excited and tried to contact the person whoes name was on there but found out they are just the transcribers and they have done a whole batch. (ie not related in any way)

The transcriber is just the person who has volunteered to transcribe the entries from records (usually GRO) for freebmd. I have seen entries where there are the names of two or more transcribers. They can give you no further information than is there on freebmd.

The entries are double checked - you can tell if one has been transcribed twice as it is in bold text.

There has been correspondence about these options on the Freebmd boards recently. Freebmd transcribers get the option of staying completely anonymous, having their transcriber name on the site, or having their email shown as well. If the transcriber has chosen the last option it MAY be because rather than transcribing whole pages for freebmd they are doing a one name study and submitting the names they transcribe; in which case they would welcome an email contact and might be able to tell you more about the family. However it might be an ordinary transcriber who has just not realised that they have gone for the wrong option.
