- not sure if this adds anything or not, but there is just one Bet* born between 1834 and 1838 in county dur* place shin* on the 1851 census - as a servant in Stranton aged 14, but named Betsey A Murray - which means that unlike her older brother Robert, she has taken the seond husband's surname. Murrey seems a very rare version of the name - the much more usual spelling seems to be Murray. The Durham online BMD marriages are, according to Genuki, fully extracted. There are just 24 Murray/Murreys marrying in Durham between 1837 and 1850, and there is just one, a Robert, who marries an Elizabeth (Robson). The IGI transcripts for Whitby do show two Elizabeth Robsons born around the right date, but then again if you check the Whitby batch there are over 200 listings for Elizabeth, so that proves nothing! John REAY ? b late 1790's ( I presume he was a miner) m Elizabeth ? b 1796 from whitby lived in Shincliffe durham Children edward 1819, John and william 1826 Hannah 1831, Robert 1832 ( my GGgfather) Betsy ann 1836 in 1841 census family living in Shincliffe Durham(but john not listed) in 1851 Elizabeth ( listed as Elizth murrey) living in Stranton, hartlepool with Robert ( REAY)and 2 lodgers, I have tried writing to the parish magazine for someone to look in Shincliffe grave yard for me for JOHN REAY. but nothing found I have also searched in the on line register BMD for elizabeths death without luck

Could you post some names and dates please then we can view the fuller picture. Husband 1 may not have been alive at the time of the 1836 baptism....but could still be named as the child's father. Gwyn

The census just takes a note of who was where on that particular night, not necessarily who actually lived in the house, so visitors were recorded in the house they were visiting, rather than their own houses, which can be confusing! Do you have the names of both of the husbands and have you looked for them separately on the censes? It could be that each of them was away for the night and are therefore recorded elsewhere. Poor houses, prisons and military bases were all recorded on that night too, so you may find them in one of those! Good luck! Ellie

Can anyone help. I can find my GGGGmother in 1841 census living in Shincliffe in Durham, but no sign of her husband.( But he was alive in 1836 as per bapitism certificate of one of the kids) By 1851 she had moved to Hartlepool and ? remarried as she has a different surname but again no sign of the husband. Q. how do i find Husbands no 1 and 2
