Which certificate to order? Birth or marriage?

Her marriage cert will show her father's name and occupation - unless of course she was illegitimate in which case it might not! Good luck Jill |

Hello, I wonder if you can help with this. I'm trying to trace my mothers grandmother and I know her name is Ada Firth and she was born 1892 in York and Died 1932 in York - However there were two Ada's of the same surname born in the same county at the same time so to go back further I need to know which family she's from. My question is if i ordered her Mariage cert (married 1917) would that say her parents name? I know the recent ones do but I haven't seen a cert issued 1917..... Or any other ways you could suggest I find out rather than order the marriage cert? Any further help very much appreciated. |

Kim The marriage certificate will give you Fathers name, her age and Fathers occupation. then you could look in the 1901 census and use his occupation as a guide line. With the birth certificates you could that put down dads name when you order it Julie |

I would get the marriage cert first because,hopefully, that will give her Dads name and witnesses too may be a help and even adresses on the cert too. And you may find the family then on the 1901 census Her dads name than can then be use as a checking point when ordering the birth cert Shirley Whoops just realised i,ve repeated what Julie advised . |

Thanks All for your help Who would you recommend I use to buy the cert? there seems to be lots of companies to buy through.... Who's best? Kim |

Order your certificate online from:- www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ If you have the full GRO reference it will cost you £7. Kath. x |
