I have bookmarked that site about occupations, should be useful. Nice to hear from a Yorkshireman! This is m.o.h's family tree. Most of his family are from Brockholes, Thurstonland, Honley etc and nearly all employed in Textile trade, except for a blacksmith in Brockholes Thanks Jennifer |

Thanks both of you. I have just looked again and I think you are right and it is Rag Extractor. What a horible job. In 1881 age 12 Ben was a 'Woollen Piecer' and in 1891 he was a 'Dyer's Labourer' Thanks again, Jennifer |

I would say it is rag extractor. Rag Gatherer cleared the rags from the machinery in the mills; often children Very good site is http://www.census1891(.)com/occupations(.)htm remove brackets Kindest regards Maureen |

Can someone tell me what a ‘Ray Extractor’ is please. I have googled but not come up with anything. This is 1901, Thurstonland near Huddersfield, Yorks. Nearly everyone else on the page is employed in the woollen/weaving industry. Name is Ben Wood (no on schedule: 27) Transcribed as ‘Bea Wood’ RG13; Piece: 4098; Folio: 15; Page: 4. Sure someone out there will be able to help, thanks Jennifer |
