Thank you for your answers By the way the tree on http://sweffling.tribalpages*com now has every name that was on the 1851 census and a lot more too. Clive

I have my tree on Ancestry, but as a private one. And yes, I have had a number of contacts through it over the years. Being private means the names come up individually, so it is up to you how much or little, you tell them. It has never given me any problems.

Romany Thanks for suggestion. In general for a search engine (of which Google is only one) you need the name in the title and er, in the technical stuff you don't see but the bots do. So where, as I am, you want people with Sweffling connections, you put Sweffling in to the title and in to the waffle together with words like ancestors, Suffolk, genealogy, family tree. It then works best if words in the waffle can also be found in the text on the first page of the site. Even so the chances of it being found by a random search are pretty small! To the others who have replied, thanks for your efforts. Clive

Clive You can't put a tree on Lost Cousins. The aim of the site is to match 1881 census entries and find your relatives that way - probably not what you want for your purpose. OC

Some people set their own site/webpage up. Dont know a thing about it, but it'd be handy, as when someone googles a surname on your tree, chances are it'd come up quite high on the list.

Lynne Can you tell me more about lost cousins please - I think I found myself on their site once and it was yet another Ancestry one. Clive

Clive If it is reasonably effortless, then I would stick the tree anywhere you can, lol. The more places it is published, then the more chance of getting contacts. However, my cynical experience is that people are happy to TAKE information, but will give you very little back to expand your tree. And if it is a public tree, then you won't even know they are doing it! OC

I have one branch (maternal) of my tree on ancestry and have never been contacted by anyone; however, i have myself contacted other people after doing tree searches and had some good results.....this doesn't really help does it !!!

Question is Ancestry any good for info from a tree. Oh that's badly put. If I put a tree on Ancestry are worthwhile contacts likely to follow? Which sort of tree on Ancestry is best (I think there are 2)? I asked GR about putting a village tree onto this site and the answer showed very clearly that the question had not been read! What other place might be worthwhile please? (It is on TribalPages.) Clive
