Thanks OC that is very useful information, I had no idea it was a common feat. You've given me more areas to explore. |

I can't help with your specific query, but building a house in 24 hours was quite a common thing to do. Many cottages etc were built in 24 hours, as this was a sort of 'blind eye' by the landowner - you had no rights of tenancy, but the land owner would rarely put you out, and could not demand rent. This could also be done on Common Land, before the Enclosures Act. 'A house' consisted of four walls and a roof, which had to be completed within 24 hours. In some places, the law was that it had to be constructed between dusk and dawn. OC |

My ggg grandfather name was William Price born 1798 and is reputed to have built a house in 24 hours in order to register his liberal vote c1860. This was in Preston Lancs and I do have a full page newspaper article published in 1941 confirming this. My question is has anybody living in Preston heard of this feat? I have traced the history of this house through trade directories etc. I am also trying to establish whether Price Bros Builders existed around 1850, they were apparently bought out by Thomas Croft Ltd as they liked the drink too much!! That sounds about right. He was also said to have built The Church House Hotel in Lancaster Road but I have yet to establish that so if anyone from Preston knows any info I will be very pleased to hear from them. Thanks for taking the time to read this Maureen |
