Funny how another pair of eyes can see what you can't see. That's the usefulness of this site, there are people prepared to take a look for you. Years ago when I worked in a bank, we had to 'balance up' every night before we were allowed home. Come 6 p.m. when you had checked, double checked, and triple checked a list of figures and couldn't find your error, it was common practice to pass it to a colleague, and they often found the error in seconds! Peter Yes I have and there are 2 possibles in the name of Elizabeth but I am loath to send for certificates at this stage. I think I will get Thomas' death certificate first and see what he died of as one of the possible deaths for Elizabeth is in the same quarter. OC / Clive Thanks for your input. Lynne PS: Sorry I did not reply last night, my PC crashed.

Do you have any reason to believe she did not emigrate? An awful lot of people did at that time. Those that had money could make more. Those that did not had a chance to make some provided they had health. Check Canada and USA. Canada was often first stop (cheaper fare and possibly subsidised). USA for its better weather. A Canadian winter without central heating might persuade even me to go to USA! Clive

There are an awful lot of Esther Shaws marrying in that time scale, so I think you have a job on your hands. She may not have used her middle initial at marriage, and she may not have said she was a widow, either. OC

Thanks Peter Any ideas on how I can find her? Lynne

Peter Report 10 Jul 2007 23:30

Lynne, She may not have called herself Elizabeth at all; it is probably another example of the census enumerator being unable to transcribe correctly his own notes. Peter

Hi Jill Yes, I have tried just searching on the initial E with the surname. She had a sister called Elizabeth Ann who was 5 years younger than her so I am puzzled as to why she called herself Elizabeth on the census. Lynne

Have you looked for her as Elizabeth - if that was the name she used? Jill

Esther Elizabeth Egerton married Thomas Hughes Shaw on 3rd Feb1870 in Salford, Manchester. She was 21, he was 35 and a widower (occupation Butcher). His first wife was Margaret Evans, born c1841 and I have them on the 1861 census. They had a son, Thomas Evans Shaw born Jun Qtr 1861. I have found Thomas, Esther (recorded as Elizabeth) Thomas junior and Thomas senior's widowed mother on 1871 census, living at 65 St Stephen's Street, Salford (the same address as on the marriage certificate for bride and groom). Thomas senior died June Qtr 1873. I cannot find Esther Elizabeth or Thomas junior in 1881 or 1891 census. I have searched for marriages and deaths for Esther and Thomas junior after 1873 but have found nothing to assist me. So, can anyone advise the next step to try and find out whether Esther re-married? Thanks in advance for any help. Lynne PS: Should I search for a 2nd marriage for Esther in the name of Egerton or Shaw? (I have tried both).
