I think your right Clive, as you say back in the good old days a murder was a murder, i still cant help but wondering what the heck the sand pits were. I know there was brickmaking in the area at the time and also some ore mining, i cant remember what metal off the top of my head without going back over my notes. I wonder if sand was needed for making bricks or maybe smelting ect, will have to find out (industrial processes are not my strong suit.... i could tell anyone how to make a make a mean chocky cake though!) |

Slain means killed In those good old days had he been murdered they would not have messed about 'murder' they said. I would guess it meant an accidental death of some sort with sand pits around I can well imagine some ghastly death Clive |

I have an ancestor, Isaac Bulmer, born in Rothwell West Yorkshire and baptised April 16th 1754. He was buried in Rothwell on September 29th 1775, the burial record contains the words ' he was slaine in the sand pits of Stie Bank in this year' Questions: Does anyone think like me that 'slaine' implies deliberatley killed Has anyone got any local knowledge and can tell me what were the sand pits of Stie Bank This one has really got me stumped, any help gratefully accepted x |
