pet names/nicknames

Having sounded out relatives for some oral history, I have lots of names such as Dot, Dolly and Nelly which dont appear in the records Im searching. Please could someone advise me where to find a list of formal versions of this type of name, as some are less obvious than others! thanks paula

Diminutives such as .Dot (Dorothy) may well be listed somewhere...........however, 'pet' names and nicknames are not likely to follow any known pattern, and may be harder to pin down....... I have examples such as Maisie (Martha) Fred (Leonard) and another Fred (Kenneth). There was a thread along these lines earlier this year.........if I can find it, I'll nudge it up Reg ps Dolly is usually Doris: Nelly/Nellie is Ellen

My sister in law is known as D o t but her name is Doris and I call my son Bert even thought his name is Benjamin. Can't even remember why now, something to do from when he was very young. Future genealogists will curse me I'm sure. LOL. Kate :) Sorry about the gaps in D o t but that's the only way I can do it without GR removing it thinking it's part of a web addie.

Nelly is usually a version of Ellen, I have lots of them. I was really stumped with Polly who appeared on one census and never again. Discovered Polly is a derivative of Mary - and found her. Can't remember the site, but if you google 'Forename derivatives' I bet you find it. Good hunting. Margaret
