Hi, In a previous posting I asked people to help me trace Irish relatives when I didnt know where they were from. I now have reason to believe they were from County Cavan. Does anyone know of a place I can obtain census records (preferrably online) from say the 1880s? Many thanks Helen

Unfortunately they do not exist. The early Censi 1821-1851 were almost completely destroyed in the 1922 Civil War, when the building housing them got a direct hit off a bomb. The 1861-91 census had already been destroyed some time before that on 'government orders', to this day nobodies quite sure why, possibly for reason of confidentiailty or may be just a mistake. Either way they are gone. Earliest Census records for Cavan, and elsewhere therefore are from 1901. I think unlike here you can also acess the 1911 too.

What may be of assistence is the C.S.I Central Singposting Site. http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm It lists the baptisms held by the Genealogical Research Centre in County Cavan There are 381 Cullen baptisms dating 1754-1925 and 96 Haltons dating 1771-1901 If you have rough idea of the birth dates and names your looking for you may be lucky enough to find their baptisms there, and can then ring or write in to the Centre in Cavan to request the full details (probably for a small charge) You could also try searching for Cullen and Halton households on Griffiths Land Valuation 1856-57, though may be a bit early for you to identify which are yours just yet. http://myirishancestry(*)com/griffiths/searchgriffiths.php

Helen have just noticed your other post with the names . The Cavan centre have three baptisms for Daniel Halton that could possibly be yours: 1876, 1883, 1886 respectively. Couldn't find one that would match for his father, but a few that could maybe fit for his mother, Catherine Cullen 1847,1857, 1859. What I would suggest is trying to find Daniels Baptism first. This should give you the townland in Cavan the family lived in. Then you can go from there, find out what records survive for that townland. I'd imagine the centre will want paying to do this, but once you have his baptism and know the townland, you should be able to view those records yourself, either by visiting Dublin Library, or if your not near Eire you can usually order the Microfilm through your Local LDS Centre. This is the email adress for the Cavan Geneaology Centre. cavangenealogy *at* eircom.net Address : First Floor, Johnston Central Library, Farnham Street, Cavan, Co. Cavan.
