I have discovered that a relly was sent to Tasmania on a ship called Lady Montague. It arrived in Dec 1852. The chaps name was Simon Witney - he stole 4 chickens! I just wondered if anyone knew any good sites that I may be able to find out a little more about the ship etc. Also can anyone find Simon Witney on the 1851 census. He was born in High Easter, Essex. The crime took place in 1849 so he was probably in prison somewhere. Any help much appreciated. Karen |

Hi, This is strange because after 1851 most convicts were sent to Western Australia. Where did you see this info about the Lady Montague? I have a convict relative myself! ;-) Cheers, Horatia PS Just found out through Wikipedia that transportation in Tasmania ended in 1853 so my apologies! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convictism_in_Australia |

Did this kind of theft run in the family? Have you seen this from 1803 http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1800s/t18031026-8.html |

It certainly looks like it - but I think that it is coincidental as the areas are different. Karen |

My George Ingold was transported for stealing chickens. Recently widowed, he had nine children to provide for. Seems that nobody took their misery into account. |
