I have just found details of how in 1873 the New Zealand Government were giving free passages to 'Single Female Domestic Servants'. As this description fits my gg aunt who i have been researching and she moved to New Zealand in 1911, do you think she would have also qualified for this nearly 40 years later? Dawn

I will ask in our gen room tomorrow. See if anybody knows. I think my inlaws were assisted migrants in 1948, and my OH in 1950 so it is possible.

There is a lot of information around about passages to NZ from very early (didn't think NZ was discovered that early!) through to 1977 with stories to match. However you have specified free passages. I can only find assisted passages and pay your own way. There are stories a bit earlier than the date you quote of people taking their staff with them. Could this be the explanation? C

Hi Clive, On the yesteryears website it talks about free passage in 1873 (www*yesteryears*co*nz) for single female domestic servants. I was just wondering if anyone had already researched a similar topic or could advise me where to look next for 1911. I am still busy searching the internet and will have a huge list of helpful NZ websites before too long. Might even put a list on here if poeple are interested. With regard to her possibly going with her employer, in the 1901 census she was working in York for the Tarman/Jarman family. They were not on the same passanger list as her. Not sure where she was any later than 1901 as not been able to trace her yet. That might be my next route of enquiry. To find her employer in York c1910. Thanks for your reply Dawn
