Evening all, I wonder, is it possible to do address searches on the 1901 census or before ? My nephew has just bought his first house and it is a weaver's cottage. I would like to find a census image of his address as a gift. Here's hoping someone can show me how to find one, Joan

You can do address searches on most censuses.........1881 is the only one which is free. You can access that on Ancestry. 1901 is on the PRO site. The rest are on findmypast site Reg

Cheers Reg. I have Ancestry and will try the 1881. Hope the cottage is that old, Joan

Oh dear it might not be the same place. I did a lot of research for a GR member for a road less than 100 yards from where I now live. Turns out the houses that were listed on the 1901 census no longer survived as they had been demolished for a road widening scheme just after the census. Also that the road had been renumbered several times over the years. Maureen

Hello Maureen, I am certain the house was there in 1901 but can't for the life of me find it.I have found the pub at the end of the road in 1881 but the little streets off the main one aren't named as I expected. How can I do the address search on the 1901 census. Joan

If its a weavers cottage then it would likely be there long before 1901 by when the industry was really quite dead. What area are you looking at?

1901 census on National Archives is searchable by address but you need to pay to view the full result. 1891 can be searched by address on Findmypast - search is free but you need credits to view the results. I am currently logged into Findmypast but will only be online for about another 15-20 minutes. Maureen

Hi Maureen, no that isn't the right one. The area is West View, Blackburn. I will ask nephew if he can look at the deeds for the cottage. May give a name or a date or even the name of the road as it was then (I appreciate that names change). Many thanks for trying, Joan

Thanks Maureen, I will look in to that one. Can't understand though that Oswaldtwistle should be with Blackburn in this way. Many many thanks, Joan
