Hi I am trying to find out some facts for my Gran on her father, he died when she was 10. He was christened (she says) at St.Micheals in Windermere. Now I am hoping in a few weeks to visit the church. Any idea if the records are kept there? or is it better to go to the central district registers? Any idea where they are? I would like to use my time there as well as possible but I am not sure where to start. My great grandad was born in 1900 we think but his parents died when he was very young and he was brought up by uncles possibly in Kendal, but he has a common name (see above) and I know nothing about him other than his death cert which does not help at all. I have no date of birth, etc. Any thoughts from anyone?

You need to establish James parentage to make sure you follow the correct person's line. Have you got his marriage certificate, which should show his father's name and occupation. Hopefully this will help you to find the family in 1901 and the father's name can be a checking point on any birth certificates you think might fit for James. Baptism records are likely to be at the main archives for the area. James' father's name and occupation should show there too. Gwyn

When was your gran born? Was her father married to her mother and was your gran the eldest child. If they were married then finding their marriage certificate would give you his father's name and make it easier to find them. I think this is where the records would be:- Cumbria Record Office, Carlisle The Castle Carlisle CA3 8UR Tel:01228 607285/607284 Kath. x
