I was hoping to find the birth reg of Elizabeth Tuft b.1846 in Liverpool but the only one I can find is born in Guildford. I've looked on the IGI and I've found one that looks like it could be her. It's for Elizob Tuft b.1846 and christened at St. Marys, Liverpool, Lancs. Her parents are John and Ann which is exactly what I'm looking for. Is there any way I can find out more about her parents as I was hoping to find mothers maiden name? Thanks Maisy

Birth registration wasn't compulsary until 1875 so it is possible she was never registered and therefore you won't get a birth certificate. Does she have any siblings? Maybe one of those was registered and you could get their cert to find Ann's maiden name. Even if you look at the baptism in the parish records, it will be very unlikely that the mother's maiden name is listed. Sam x

Sam, unfortunately the other children were born in Ireland and as I'm not sure where I was hoping Elizabeth was registered here.

Hi Maisy - they seem particularly elusive. I tried for a marriage on the IGI (no doubt you have too) with no success. Then I tried the 1851 census records - putting in Elizob [and Elizabeth], date and place of birth with parents John and Ann - and got no joy. I tried Tuft, Toft, Toff, Tuff, Tutt - but no luck. Victoria, thanks for trying, they're a bit of a pain to track down! Reggie, yes that's them on the 1871 census. I thought the parents married in Ireland but was hoping for Elizabeths birth. On the IGI it has a christening at St Mary's Liverpool. Maybe I'll try and get a copy of that because I do have other baptism certificates with mothers maiden name on. Might be lucky. If her recorded age in 1871 is accurate, the baptism you found would be too early.......... Reg
