Can anyone tell me if it was common practice back in 1920's for children to take on their new step-father's last name if their widowed mother re-married?

Anything is possible. I have the reverse case of my gt Grandmother conitnuing to have kids after her first husband died and calling them all by his surname!! Even though their father was DINE, they were called Woodgate.
