My Great Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth Whitehead died on the 13th February 1898 aged 36years at the Infirmary. My Great Grandparents lived at number 36 St Mary Street Woolwich. The Death Certificate states the sub district of East Plumstead. The Death was registered on the 14th February 1898. This September I am returning to England and would very much like to visit the Grave of my Great Grandmother. Can anyone help me here as to where she might have been laid to rest. Regards Marion |

Woolwich Cemetary was opened in 1884 so she could be buried there. Its in SE London. Its on Kings Highway. There is a web site called London Cemetaries. You may be able to contact them to see if thats the nearest for East Plumstead. Julie |

its run by Greenwich council who also govern Plumstead so likely to be that cemetery. The phone number to do with the cemetery seems to be 0208 0854 740 |

It could be Lewisham. The head of bereavement services there has been very helpful to me. If not, she could point you in the right direction, hopefully: Bereavement services Lewisham Crematorium, Verdant Lane, London SE6 1TP Tel: 020 8698 4955 or 020 8697 2555 |

You stated the Infirmary - that was probably, by 1898, the Woolwich Union Infirmary - part of the Woolwich Union Workhouse, much later called St Nicholas' Hospital which unfortunately no longer exists - it is a housing estate !! There are two nearby cemeteries - one is now known as Woolwich Cemetery (opened 1884) which is in Kings Highway - very close to the old St Nicks - and a bit further out is Plumstead Cemetery (Opened 1890) in Wickham Lane/Upper Wickham Lane. Those are the closest (about 1 1/2 miles max. between St Nicks and Plumstead Cemetery. A little further afield (but still close) is Charlton Cemetery, Shooters Hill Cemetery (now called Greenwich Cemetery) and recently Hillview Cemetery. You could try e-mailing heritage.centre'at'greenwich.gov.uk ( not allowed to put the 'at' symbol here) giving them full details and maybe they can help you - this is the archive centre for genealogy in Greenwich Borough of which Plumstead is now part. There may be a charge for this service. This address may also have records of the Infirmary. |
