I know on GR you can search for a property to see who lived there in a census year (or you used to), but can this be done on Ancestry or anywhere else? I can't seem to locate my Great Grandparents on the census searches, either in the area they grew up in or where they eventually lived around 1901. I thought I might have better luck if I could do a census search on the house where I believe they lived in 1901. Anyone know if this can be done or does it only work on names? Many thanks |

I believe you can search an address on 1881 - free 1901 address search you have to go onto 1901 census site which charges All other address searched can be done on findmypast but they charge too |

I'm confused - is 1881 another website? I've googled it but haven't found anything. I am a fully paid member of Ancestry, but don't see any way on there of searching the addresses rather than the people by name. |

It was 29 Dillwyn Road, Lower Sydenham, London SE26. It's not there now - the entire road was demolished in the 1970's to make way for a new housing estate. I'm looking for Harry & Selina Smith who were the parents of my Grandfather Frederick Smith, who was born in 1901, although he wouldn't appear on the census as he was born 13th Dec. Selina was born in Kilmington Devon in 1869, but I have yet to confirm where Harry was born. I've found a Harry Smith in Great Bardfield, Essex born 1862, which could be him, but was hoping that Selina and Harry may appear somewhere on the census records so I could see if it says where he was born to prove if I am right or wrong about the Harry I found in Great Bardfield. Oh it's never easy is it :o( |

You can also try looking at each enumeration district description until you see the road: http://content.ancestry.*co.uk/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=7814&path=London.Lewisham.Sydenham Rose |

Rose you are a gem !!! Thank you so much for that! Looks like there was a transcription error as she was never known as Selma, but that is 100% definately them. Thank you ! The Lodge in Worsley Bridge Road was another of the family properties - I had no idea that they were there at that time. Many many thanks and have a cyber cream cake on me for your help !! |

Thanks Sue. I saw that, and am pretty sure that it means Bardfield (or Great Bardfield), which is as it states on the earlier info I have for Harry Smith. I've done a location search and there is no such place as Borfield in Essex, but there is Great Bardfield, so I think that is just the enumerator who has put Borfield. At least it all matches up now with the earlier info that I had found for Harry on familysearch, and I can fill in his parents details too!. Thanks for all the help everyone :o) |
