My birth cert issued in 1953 is a short one. Mum was actually in hospital when the registrar came round the wards but she did not have enough money on her to get the full certificate. I have never purchased the full one but I am pretty certain it will have all the right details on it. Maureen

Hi, Could anyone tell me if a birth certificate (from 1906) would contain parents names? My Nans cert issued in 1928 is the long type and does give her parents information but my mums issued in 1952 is a smaller square one and doesn't - why is that? I dont want to order a BC issued in 1906 and find it doesn't give the information I need. Thanks

The short certs are issued free but the full ones had to be paid for. Some parents didn't want to pay out for the long one. When you order a certificate from the GRO it is the full one. Janice

Janice is right, short certs were free but details of parents still had to be given when you physically registered the birth and the GRO will issue a long cert with all the relevent details included......unless you have loads of annoying rellies like mine who had illegitimate children....horrible when you open that envelope and there is no fathers name given, my lot were so naughty lolol
