Hi Jill, When you have the flash drive plugged in it should show the option to back up custom directory to drive G. Thats what mine does but it only shows when it is plugged in. Christine

Can anyone tell me how to back up to flash drive my Son was going to do it for me but he says FTM doesn't give that option. I hope it is OK to put this on here now but reading this has just reminded me and didn't want to start another thread. Regards Jill

Easiest way is to simply copy your FTM master file onto disc or CD using drag and drop. Unless you have a cd re-writer then you can only use the cd once. There is no need to export or make gedcoms. Interestingly if you export as a gedcom then re-import it you don't necessarily get an exact copy, especially if you have notes or other facts on your tree.

I use PAF 5.2, but if FTM has a export feature, then use that to export the tree as a GEDCOM to a folder, which can then be copied to a disc. I f you need to restore, then just import the GEDCOM file back into the FTM program. Use the above in addition to the normal backups, for extra insurance always do regular backups to an external drive, or disc.

June, I dont think it matters about the workings of the puter but you do need to have a family tree program on the computer for someone to be able to read your GR program. Why dont you go to twr computing get a family tree maker and then you can create your own family tree website. You can then give any friends.rellies the addy and they can view it from their own puters. You certainly shouldnt leave your info on GR only.

Sorry to butt in on your thread Jay, but... Sarah - is it the same to back up on a floppy disc? I've done it once, but can't remember what I did!, and now I've got more info on my FTM, I need to back it up again. Bee.

Thanks Sarah. I hadn`t realised that custom directory and and working directory applied to the disc. Jay.

Hi Jay When I back up my family treemaker 2005, I always use the same disc. click custom directory & OK, it then asks if you want to overwrite it, click yes Regards, Sarah

Hi, I use FTM 2005 and I still get mixed up about backing up. When I want to put the new info which I`ve just added onto a writeable disc, do I need to put a new disc in each time? If not, then does the new version just overwrite the previous one with the new info added on, or will there be another separate new version on the disc as well as the previous one giving me two different copies on the sane disc? Also when asked if I wish to backup the file to the Custom directory or the Working directory, what`s the difference ? Jay.
