Received into Church

I have been transcribing Baptisms in a local Parish Register and note that in the 1790's a number of entries are marked 'Received into Church' rather than as Baptisms. Some of these, but by no means all followed Private Baptisms. Can anybody explain the difference and why his was used rather than Baptism. Steve

Steve-I don't think this is going to help you much, but my Cof E church had a couple of pews at the very back of the church before you came across the baptismal font. This was where the unbaptised ie very young babies with their mothers could sit and partake of the service without going beyond the font.Only baptised persons could go beyond this point.

Private baptisms usually occured because the infant was sickly and may not survive. When they did survive, they were received into the church at a later date. I have one such event where there was a private baptism, the infant survived and was received into the church a year later, only to die a couple of months after that. Jennifer
