Thanks Victoria. does anyone know how to obtain police records for offenders? I'd not thought about that before. I might head over to my favorite police forum and ask there too. :D |

The trouble is, Ian, that until the census' are released it would be very hard to track your grandfather! So, you have another 50, 60, 70 years to wait. It is possible that the police 'knew' Eliza, and that there would be records of the children being in care. It is also a possibility that there is a maintenance order somewhere ensuring your Grandfather would help support the child he fathered. Now quite how you go about finding them I am at a loss to know but since this thread has been returned to page one, someone might have some useful suggestions. Happy hunting Victoria (one of the 'night shift' - in Australia!) |

Thanks Orangeblossom. I've had a go but I'm useless. I've spent most of this weekend trying but I've not had much luck. Previous attempts to find things and not managing I've come here and asked and the superstars here have managed to do what I haven't been able to. I've just rememberd the formatting is messed up on the first post so I'll paste it again below to make it easier to read. I do not think you can do it but here goes. First, the back-story, I have given the information before but I have found a whole lot more. My granddad died just before I was born in 1973. When he died he, left many questions unanswered and left us believing certain things. One of the lies he told us was that his family all died in the blitz in Portsmouth. It turns out that he lied and that he left family 'darn sarf' sometime in the late 40's. His mother, my great grandma Eliza Ellen Allbrook (b. 1881), was a lovely woman who would help anyone out. However, she was also a thief and if she saw something she liked, she'd have it. This I believe caused problems and she ended up moving around London quite a lot. She also put her children in a home until they were old enough to work, took them out and got them working. In fact it would appear that she even got one working the streets, but this is word of mouth. Anyway, my granddad was also a bit of a lad and also a ladies man, he used to carry a handkerchief with red ink on it to make out he had been injured in the war and get into the ladies hearts. Smooth or what? I have been told that he had at least one lady, not sure if he married, and had a son before something caused him to up-sticks and move up to Derby where he met my grandma and lived a happy but secretive life with her. I was wondering if some of you clever lot could look to see if you can find this woman and child on the very sketchy information I have. Below are the details. Great Grandma: Eliza Ellen Allbrook (b. 1881 -- d. 1977) Also in a census as Eliza Helen Allbrook My granddad: Henry Charles Lawrence Young (b. 1904, London -- m. 16 Dec 1950 -- d. 1973 Derby) He did go by the name of Harry and at some point he's used the spelling Laurence and hyphenated the last two names to Lawrence-Young Granddads siblings: Ruth Young b.1905 Edward Young b. 1908 Alice Young b. 1911 Bertha Young b. 1911 (Twin with Alice) Lillian Marian Young b. 1914 Now he married my grandma in 1950 so sometime before this he has moved around London with his family, when they weren't in care, he also spent time in the Army and then the Airforce. He then moves from London to Portsmouth where he has spent some time with his sister Lillian. At sometime he has met a woman called Blanche and had a son called Lawrence possibly Laurence. Can anyone find this Blanche and son Lawrence? |

If the child was illegitimate, it is likely that he was given his mothers surname, rather than your Grandfathers. However, if by some chance he is under the male surname, you can search the BMD index free on Ancestry. Go to http://www.ancestry*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx (change * to . ) The mothers maiden name would be listed, so you could find out her full name. |
