I've recently been asked to export my tree from Genes to merge with another member but I don't understand what will actually happen as there is mention of having to delete your tree at one point. I don't want to do this but there is a good possibility of gaining alot of info if I get the procedure right. If I export to this member does it mean I loose my tree altogether from Genes to I import back or does it stay as it was till I import back. What are the risks of losing my tree by doing this? I'm fairly confident that the member is honest enough but I don't want to loose what I have already till I'm sure that what is being offered is actually my family. Margaret |

Exporting your tree from GR just makes a copy, and the tree will remain here unaltered. If the tree is merged or altered in any way and then reimported, it will overwrite what you have permanently, for good or ill. I would be very careful, if you are not in control of the process. |

If you have the chance to have a tree programme on your own computer (or friends if yours is a company one) download the PAF 5 programme from the Latter day Saints site - it's free. You will then be able to see and edit (a) the tree you have downloaded from GR and (b) look at the merged tree. If you like that you can up load to GR again. Clive |

Make sure you keep copies of everything then if it goes wrong you can things back to where there were. You should end up with tree files. Your gedcom, their gedcom and a merged one. Just make sure you don't destroy or overwrite your GR gedcom |

I don't quite see the point of merging your trees, in fact I'd advise against it. You don't want to add any relatives to your tree until you've checked them out - how do you know your contact hasn't made any mistakes? As the others have said, you can export a 'gedcom' file from GR by clicking on Import/Export tree. This is just a copy of your tree, which remains on GR, so there's no need to reimport. The gedcom is e-mailed to you, and you can then e-mail it to your contact. If your contact then merges the two trees and sends you the merged version, don't reimport it to GR unless you want to lose your original tree. You won't be able to read it without a family tree program like PAF (free from familysearch.org) or FTM. However, if you don't want to get a family tree program, you can ask your contact to send you a report in a doc or rtf file, which you can read with Word. |
