A chance that the eldest child was an illegitimate child of the mother so was born and baptised elsewhere to avoid scandal? Margaret

Are they extracted entries or submitted entries? My answer would depend on your reply. Cheers, Horatia

Records on the IGI are only a minute proportion of the Parish Registers. Extracted entries on the IGI all depend entirely on the efforts of volunteers, and we can only see what the volunteers have done. It may be that the first baptism fell into an earlier register and that has not yet been transcribed. Or he may have been missed off, or mistranscribed - you need to look at the original to satisfy yourself of this. OC

1812-1813 was the time when the format of the registers changed and as OC says your person may be in the old register, whereas the siblings are in the new one. I am still hunting for a baptism for around that date and have been searching on and off for over 9 years. Gwyn

Another problem which can arise is that IGI is often from Bishop's Transcripts not the parish registers themselves. There can be big differences between the two. Clive
