I have a birth cert for 1839 - nice handwriting all except for the Mothers Surname! I just can't make out what it says and it's driving me crazy! I would be really grateful if any kind souls out there could take a look at it and offer their opinion. If you are happy to PM me your email address I can forward a copy. Many Thanks. Dawn

I think the mother's maiden name is either Vass or Voss. It looks like the old fashioned way of writing a double s with an fs. Kath. x

If you want to be sure you should ring up the GRO (or register office if ordered from there) and ask them to look at it for you. They are usually very helpful. Kath. x

Thanks, satisfied my nosey streak lol. I think Kaths right, Voss. I have a lot of Rossers in my family (yes i said ROSSERS lol) and on most of the certs, they're all c1837 to 1850, the double ss in the middle looks identical to the last two letters on your cert, more like an s and an f than a double s.

Kath, that sounds like a good idea, I will give them a ring. Let's see what Sharon and Julie think it is. Dawn x

Thank you Kath, Julie and Sharon. Vass or Voss appears to be the verdict. In future, I shall bear in mind 'fs' meaning 'ss'. You learn something new everyday in this game! Thanks again ladies. Dawn x
