Normally the latter - not a pleasant job - check out the people and area around him in a census. Im afraid the above definition is a bit nicer than the actual job would have entailed. The guys would have been scraping the flesh off the hides too. Anything you need to know like this - or anything! - try a google search.

There are two possible meanings: Currier - One who dresses the coat of a horse with a currycomb - One who tanned leather by incorporating oil or grease http://www.rootsweb*com/~albarbou/docs/oldoccupations.htm (replace asterisk with dot)
