SEEKING PROOF OF MARRIAGE

The trouble is Colin, that there are no guarantees with any of this - but, given their ages, I would reckon they probably were married. I had a quick look at the FreeBMD index and there don't appear any likely candidates in the right time frame and location so I would trawl the other indices, quarter by quarter because from what I saw, a lot haven't been indexed yet. I take it that you have the birth certificate that gives the mother's name as Jane, nee Parsons. This should also provide you with the father's occupation which would give you a better idea of whether the George you THINK might be yours is more or less likely to be the right one. Anyway, once you've found a marriage and got a certificate with their fathers names, it will make finding them on the census, much less chancey. Victoria

Colin Report 20 Jul 2007 14:21

My gt grandfather George Sullivan b 1855 Poplar/Whitechapel is shown in the 1881 census with wife Jane Parsons b 1861 Southwark and shown with two young sons George aged 1 and Harry a few months old. My problem is that I cannot find any reference to the marriage. 1. How likely is it that they weren't formally married at that time? 2. If they did marry how can I find details of this and therefore a certificate to show their parents? I have jumped to the conclusion that the George Sullivan shown as a boy seaman in the 1871 census is the same person and that he is the son of Patrick and Mary Sullivan shown in the 1861 census, but i have no firm proof of this. Can any one help or advise me. Colin Sullivan
