hi have a richard coles and hanna casbrooke 1795 1794 they had 12 kids(nowt better t do i suppose) but two of these kids were called james 1821 and 1829 am i tottaly mad? why would they give them the same name? did they run out of names??? or are they one person, dates just all mixed up!!!! please help me! amanda x |

Maybe the first James died so the second one was named after him, that was the norm in those days to name another child after one that was lost. Or they DID name two ,James,. Coincidently I found two James on the 1881 as siblings to my grandad one aged 4 and the other one, thought it was a mistake till i found that one was James Joseph and the other James Herbert. each child on a day to day basis was known by his second name. So yes did happen to name two kiddies the same. Shirley |

No you're not going daft....My gt gt grandfather named 3 of his daughters Mary! Only the first one was known as Mary the other 2 were known by their second names. You might find that the first child died and the second was named after him...as I too have found that in my family. The 2 firstborn children died as did the wife after giving birth to the fourth child. 3 years later he remarried and named 2 of his children by the second wife after the 2 that had died in early childhood. It seems to be quite common back in the 1800's. Regards...Teresa |
