Would Parish Marriage Records c1780, be likely to show more information than the LDS IGI shows, for bride and groom ? Brian

Quite likely. Records at that time are a bit hit and miss in what is shown but you would have the witness names, which might prove really useful. Hopefully too the record will show whether the bride and groom had been married before. However we have found that sometimes bachelor or spinster was not truthful in the way that we would understand the words. They seem to have inferred 'free to marry'. Gwyn

Thanks for reply Gwyn...any opinions on using LDS family centers, or buying credits on Genealogist.com to search Parish Records ? I am not in the UK so can't use the services there. Brian

Bryan I use my LDS family history centre weekly for parish register look ups and much prefer this way of doing things, as it means I see a film of the original, not someone's transcription. OC

The trouble with most of the alternatives is location. If you live in the right vicinity you can go to the records off ice and read the parish register (if it exists for the place/date).Another alternative is to pay for someone to read on your behalf. On line you should be able to tell if a record exists at all but be warned. I have found with LDS they will say 'record 1760 -1850' when they have nothing earlier than 1805. Clive

Stupid me - did not answer your question! Some parish registers are a mine of information and others are not. Some set out to show how clever the church warden was so everything is in Latin! Clive

Margaret If you don't live near an LDS centre, and you don't live near the relevant County Records Office, then it is difficult, and you will have to rely on SKS to do a lookup for you. I always say that you cannot tell what information will be on a church register unless you look at it! I have seen everything, from just a name, to a mini biography. OC
