Hello There, when I find a mistake on Ancestry I always take the time to send a correction..but for the past 2 days although I am sending in the corrections it doesn't say that the correction has been accepted...is there a problem? Or am I wasting my time at the moment ??? Regards, Margaret. |

Had the same problem last night. Tried twice with one correction and I have no idea if it went through okay or not. Maureen |

I'm not sure. I've sent a few for my mistranscribed relatives and sometime it's taken months before the alternate ie. actual name shows up in the searches. I wish you could correct place names. One of my relatives has his surname misspelt in 1871 (as do the whole family) and on top of that someone has translated his birthplace as 'Beanmaince' - the image reads 'Beaumarice', a misspelling of Beaumaris in Anglesey but there are no facilities to change these. |

As a point of interest - would Ancestry alter an entry on the word of one person? I've found a few mistranscriptions in my family but wondered if they would do anything just on my say so - wouldn't they have to do some kind of check? M. Steer |

1) Kate - previously on submitting alternative names/transcriptions etc, the next page has been an acknowledgement page, noting that the alternative may take a while to show up. As others say, I have not had an acknowledgement over the last week or so - and they may not be getting through! 2) Margaret (Steer), when submitting an alternative, an explanation for the alternative must also be submitted. Ancestry then index the census record under both the original transcription and the suggested alternative - and you can view the explanation and the name of the submitter, to see whether you agree that the alternative stacks up. I see that some people are suggesting not only nicknames and alternative transcriptions and names used on other records, but also maiden names, which seems like a good idea. As with any record, the possibilities need to be viewed with caution. |
