Hi All Been searching for one of my grandad brother's for a few years without any luck, that's till friday night messing around on the computer googled his name and WOW there he was, amongst the( Men and Women of Royal Navy Lost 1922-2007) I was told he was killed while serving in RN some where in the Persian Gulf, by a member of family. I searched through GRO and Marine deaths but came up with nothing. I was so excited I E-mailed the person who had done the research and asked how and where did he find his death, he was on the Admiralty Ratings Death Ledger, and he also done a search in Marine Death of GRO but nothing, he has not been Registered WHY? How come he was not Registered, Sorry i have BABBLED on bit, but has anyone else had this problem before.

Hello Ann, I had a great uncle who died during the first world war, his ship hit a mine of Scotland and sank (Merchant Marine), his death is not registered, found him on the CWGC site. I asked the same question and was told it was up to the captain to register the deaths. Pat.

Hello Pat So have you managed to get a death certificate for your uncle? I Phoned GRO yesterday morning, they said he has to be Registered and are going to do a search, Ann

I have a great aunt and uncle who died in a bombing raid during the war and I am unable to find a death for either of them. Kathlyn

Hi Ann and Kathlyn I think there are a couple of things that may be the reason here. I presume, if there was no body found, then there may have been a wait before the certificate could be issued. I think it's currently 7 years before someone can be declared dead. In addition, if you go to the very last page on the Deaths images on Ancestry there are a number of 'Unknown' entries. I would think that these are either unidentified bodies, or the information with regard to name was not completed when sent to the GRO. Hope this helps. Helen

Hi Helen I never knew that you had to wait 7yrs before a death certificate could be issued. thanks for that I'll take a look at ancestry never ever noticed the unknown section, who know's his brother might pop up.. Thanks Ann

Hi Ann, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, no I didn't get a death certificate because I cannot find his death recorded anywhere apart from the CWGC, please could you let me know how you get on with the GRO. Pat
