You may have to accept that it was a common-law marriage!! Not at all uncommon even in those days.

I have found the family in 1901, in Gloucestershire. Sam, you are right not everyone tells the truth in the census, Fred certainly gets younger over the years. I will expand my search to check the indexes, further. I know that FreeBMD don't have them on transcription yet. many thanks Ann

How do you know where the marriage took place if you can't find it? 1878-1881 isn't a very big window, perhaps you should widen your search, plenty of people said they were married on a census when they weren't! Sam x

Pretty sure Emily was still alive in 1923 when her son married, as I have photos of the family, I assume Emily is there although you are making me question this now! many thanks

There is an Emily Tamplin that died 1906 age 43 that would make her the right age. Have you found her 1901 census. Irene

Hi Ann Could Emily have married before she married Frederick. I've found a marriage between a Fred Brook and Emily Broadhead in March Quarter of 1880. Do you think she could have used an stage name instead of Tamplin. Pam

I have searched for a marriage between Frederick Charles Brook(es) b c1856 and Emily Violet Tamplin b 1862 for a long time without success. I have checked uk indexes for 1878 - 1881 and scotlands people in case they eloped! 1n 1881 Census Emily says she is married, Fred says he is single. Emily's first child was born 1881 and has surname of Brooks. They were a theatrical family and travelled extensively. I know that Fred was in Chicago, although I am not sure when. I have also checked US marriages on Ancestry. Maybe they never married, any ideas would be much appreciated. many thanks Ann
