I am trying to find out about my husbands Great Aunt who emigrated from Italy to France in 1906. I have her marriage cert and details of 3 children she had in France, the family lost contact with her after that. Does any one know if there were census returns in France. I have tried Googling but with no success. I've been on the About.com site as well that deals with obtaining BMD's but can find no information on Census' Ann |

I think that your travels around the web have shown you that there is no census that compares to those that we have/had in U.K. The French 'recensement' has been taken 1801, 1806, 1821, 1826, 1831, 1836, 1841, 1846, 1851, 1856, 1861, 1866, 1872, 1876, 1881, 1886, 1891, 1896, 1901, 1906, 1911, 1921, 1926, 1931, 1936, 1946, 1954, 1962, 1968, 1975, 1982, 1990, 1999 and 2004. Procedures are different than here in that a person over the age of 16 must present himself with documents proving his residence and that he is French. Information given is for statistical purposes only - www.insee.fr. shows how the figures are used nationally from information given departmentally - an indication of what is available is : http://www.recensement.insee.fr/RP99/rp99/PAGE_ACCUEIL.user_choixF Census for genealogic purposes is not available. Explanation of the word RECENSEMENT not only translates to CENSUS but also INVENTORY which better explains the purpose. |
