This is the address for Lancashire County Record Office:- Postal Address: Lancashire Record Office Bow Lane PRESTON Lancashire PR1 2RE UK Tel: +44(0)1772 533039 If you google.....Lancashire County Record Office.....there is also an email address but GR won't let me put it on here (even with brackets round it). You could email them and ask what records they hold, but most county record offices hold a great number of records of all descriptions. You can google for the address of any of the county record offices. Kath. x

Hi all, I am now running out of info I can get from the web, need to visit local records centres. Not done this at all. Let's take Lancashire as an example. Is there just one record centre, or several for different purposes, e.g. church records, electoral registeres, municipal graves? And what do I need to have done before I go to a centre? Thanks Margaret

Don't worry about visiting a record office. It can be a bit scary the first time you go but you'll soon feel like an expert. Don't take any pens with you! ;-) Research at a record office is far more satisfying than online research. You can find lunatic asylum records, workhouse records, newspaper items and of course parish registers. You get a better sense of achievement and really feel like a proper family historian once you start researching in a record office. I was looking at original records from an asylum complete with photos of the patient - nothing online compares to that. Cheers, Horatia

Thanks Kath, I'm off to Google. Thanks Horatia - why no pens? Pencils instead? Thanks Miss Marple, will have a look. Margaret
