Hi There are lots of sites with information about convicts transported to NSW and VDL (Van Diemens Land). If you start from one of the 'index' sites, like cyndislist(.)com you will find there are lots of ways to track the convict families - lots of people already have, it was a really big thing to have a convict ancestor, during the Bicentenary in 1988. Another good place to start is 'Convicts to Australia' website http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/convicts/list.html#Tasmania Look on the Records Office Board - Mary Whetton is offering lookups of the newly released ancestry records relating to convicts sent to NSW. If you get some further info, I will gladly look for more for you, but I cannot find anything on the websites I have access to. Diane |

I wouldn't know how you chased this up either - but Van Diemen's Land wa the former name of Tasmania. |

Thomas Cooling was sent to Australia on 11 June 1827 and arrived 27 September 1827. He had been sentanced on 16 October 1826 to 7 years for stealing 7 tame fowl. I have obtained copies of all the court proceedings and his request whilst a prisoner to bring his family out to Australia. I would very much like to find out what happened to him after his release but dont know how. He landed at Sydney and was then transfered to Van Demons Land. |
