Thank you Clive and Peter. Started to add back the deleted people and you were right..not gone just detached...but I did not check back and have been struggling to get them back where they belong. Thanks again Colin |

Firstly unless you specifically save a file one for the date, you wont be able to go back. Both your main and backup file are updated as soon as you change any data. Secondly, deleting a person does not mean you have lost the descendants. It is just that they have become detached. No problem at all. Enter the correct person then put you cursor in a blank child box. Select peple from the menu, then fix relationship and add child. This opens your list of names, select the one you want and ad it back. If the siblings are already linked to each other say yes to attach them as well, if not repeat the attach until you have each one back. Sometimes there is no need to delete people if you have got it wrong. Just change the details to the correct ones. It all depends what the problem is. |

Hi I too am having difficulties with this programme. Even though I have a back up CD, each time I try to open it it asks me to input a new file name. I seem to have 'lost' relatives as each time I look at the entries I appear to have to input them over again. This is really frustrating. Beginning to wonder if FTM is the correct programme for me. Just wanted a simple one to input and print off. Di |

First, make a copy of your present FTM file, so you have a spare if anything goes wrong. To do that, go to File - Export entire file, and give the new file a different name from your present one. To restore your original file from your last backup, go to File - Restore from local backup. You should find a file with the same name as your family tree file and the extension .fbk. Choose that, and the backup will become a normal .ftw file. Restoring the backup overwrites your present tree, which is why you need to make a copy of it with a different name first (because if the backup isn't a recent one, you're going to lose a lot more stuff). |

Colin I expect FTM to have a Search facility. Use that to check whether you have in fact deleted so many people. If you have not (my expectation) then select that person followed by add parent. That is definitely whay both my programmes will allow. C |

Thanks Clive, I deleted one person to correct a marriage and lost all the descendants.....There are ways I could obtain the information. I have sent e-mails containing the full file to someone recently and could use that..possibly..also printed a copy for an aunt but not yet sent it...so it is possible to redo it all again....but all the amendments over the last month will have been lost. Thanks for your help Cheers |

I do not have a copy of FTM however I expect that if you go to File (top left on your screen) and read all the lines one will say Backup or just possibly Create a Zip file. (There will also be one which says Export which is how you would make a GED file probably). When the computer closes down it is saving information about what you have done during the day, it is not saving data from the programmes you have used. Sorry but it sounds as if you have lost your information C |

I don't know about backups...but each time my computer closes it does go throw the motion which says it is backing up files...so probably set on a daily basis....if that helps |

Do you make a back up on a daily basis? On the two programmes I use each day's backup has a date so I can load a back up from a specific date. By the way, I have my programmes set to back up each time they are closed. If you do not back up thenyou can not go back a day, sorry. C |
