Hi
I'm looking for information of a bith and death in 1979 but GRO doesn't cover this year.
Is there anyway of finding out some information without buying the certificate?

The freebmd site covers those years.

What information are you hoping to find?

The death registration on that site should give you the recorded birth date.

Link to the site Gwyn mentions:

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/search

The search result for the birth will tell you the mother's maiden name.
The search result for the death will tell you the child's date of birth - or at least what the informant thought the DOB was. It will not tell you the exact date of death.

For more details (correct DOB, exact DOD, address, etc) you will need to buy the certs, via the GRO site.
Go to "Place an order" in the right-hand menu on GRO, and order using the FreeBMD search result details (volume and page numbers, etc)
