I was told years ago that my great grandfather had gone to Russia to work for awhile. He had brought a samovar home with him that stood at one side of fireplace.( I never saw this but my father said he had.) He was probably there late 19th century. I have recently discovered that 3 rings I have inherited are possibly russian. does anyone know anywhere that might have records etc of migrant workers going to russia? I had never seriously considered it being true but am intrigued now THOMAS TETLOW or HARRY WALTER FREEMAN (not sure which one) thanks karen

Do you mean the late 1900's rather than the 19th Century , which would be late 1800's?
I doubt there are any records unless they were emigrating.
Are there gaps in the census when they might have been away. Occupations might give a clue. Did they marry late, was there a big gap between births of children?
Have you asked google etc?

Unfortunately there are virtually no records online of travel between Britain and the continent of Europe.
Searching for the names:
Harry Walter Freeman - is that the man born in Droitwich in 1853, who married Mildred Rogers in West Bromwich in 1878?
I don't see any travel records for him. He was in West Bromwich in 1881; Manchester in 1901 and 1911; in South Manchester in 1921, and died in Ashton, Lancs in 1925.
Interestingly, he's not with Mildred and the children in 1891 (in Southcoates, Hull) , and so far I can't see him listed elsewhere..
Of course, there's no knowing where anyone might have been between census years.

What dates or places of birth or residence do you have for Thomas Tetlow?
That is a more common name than Harry Walter Freeman.
However, even without knowing his age, I can't see any records of travel for anyone of that name to any European destination.

Have you found BOTH of them on ALL censuses during their lifetimes?
|
Two Thomas Tetlows - at least - in Karen’s GR tree. One born 1858, the next born 1889 - both Manchester area
Either of these dates would fit for a great-grandparent of someone living today

What were their occupations?
I remember seeing a TV programme, where they talked about people connected with the textile industry going to work in Russia around that time. Rather than actual travel documents, maybe the employer's records might give a hint to possible travel.

https://drawnground.co.uk/2015/04/british-workers-in-the-russian-textile-industry-before-1917/
"Before the 1917 revolution Russia had an enormous thriving textile industry, ranking fourth in the world for production after Britain, the USA and Germany. Much of its machinery was imported from Britain. Until they had developed their own local expertise, Russian mill-owners were dependent upon managers and engineers coming from Britain and from the other western European countries who supplied machinery, to set up equipment, to supervise its use and to train the Russian workers in many different processes."
Comment on above website by Dave Collier on January 31, 2017
"...Two prolific Lancashire mill engine makers exported very large numbers of engines to power Russian textile mills from the 1860s onwards. They worked closely with Platt Brothers. These were Bolton engine makers Hick, Hargreaves & Co and John Musgrave & Sons"

I discovered that a sibling of my great grandfather spent time in Russia during the 1870s. He was the manager of a cotton mill in Royton, Lancashire, but spent some time in Russia in the 1870s, one of his sons was born in St Petersburg, and baptised there in 1874. Other sons were called Herman, Oscar and Emil, as I haven't found the family in all censuses, that makes me wonder if he also spent time in Germany!
There apparently was a lot of exchange at that time as Russia was getting the cotton industry up and running.
I found some information from FMP (FindMyPast) ........... British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms, then under Source Foreign Registers & Returns: Russia
