I wonder if you would be better off getting his birth cert? That way you will have Ellen's maiden name. The family are pretty confusing and it might just give you the lead you need.

Births Sep 1891 (>99%)
Adams Benjamin W Derby 8b 539

Ellen isn't a known diminutive for Eleanor as far as I know, but with the 'flexibility' with names back then would be an acceptable variation/error I think.

Think I was barking up the wrong tree the Thomas Adams (a chemist) I was looking at in the 1891 census lived at 26 Jubilee Drive and I noticed Mabel Adams lived at that address in 1911 but there are no other Adams's at that address in 1891.

Is Ellen a derivation of Eleanor that is confusing me as well. Also the reference to her being born in Wrexham, I noticed on the 1901 census that my grandfather Benjamin Adams was living with his Aunt and Uncle and the Aunt was from Denbighshire. I just wonder how come my Grandfather is living apart from his siblings and his brother William Frederick doesn't appear on the census either.

LondonBelle

Just looking at that census too, Brummiejan...the address is 122 Gloucester Place so must be the family.

Although, Judith said that Benjamin's father was a Chemist and on all the baptisms and census Thomas (father) is listed as a Joiner or Builder

Hi, Thanks for your help, I had found the two census records this is what made me believe that my Great Grandmother must have died during 1891. I will look in the BMDs to see if I can find any record.

How I wished I'd asked my parents and my Grandmother more about my family. I know that Benjamin Adams went on to become a ships dispenser (I notice that his father Thomas Adams was a chemist) working on cruise liners and was torpedoed twice during the second world war, and gave his place up in the life raft, he died in 1947.

Hi Judith.
Where was the family in 1891? I suggest you look on Freebmd for deaths for Ellen 1891-1901 in that area, if you haven't already.
Have you looked to see if anyone else on here is researching this family? Use search box above right to check trees.

Hi
I have been looking into my grandfather (Benjamin Adams) who I know was christened on 8th September 1891 in St Silas Church, Liverpool. He disappears and then I found him on the 1901 and 1911 census living with his aunt and uncle, I then found his father in the 1901 census as a widower living in Liverpool, it seems that the children must have been divided among the family and his wife Ellen must have died (maybe in childbirth) having my grandfather.

I wondered if any one has any information on an Ellen Adams who had four children, Benjamin, Mabel, William Frederick and John who were all christened at St Silas between 1888 and 1891.

Thank you
