My ancestors travelled from Somerset to Yorkshire around 1864. The family comprised of the father and mother plus 9 children and another adult relative. I would like to know what method of transport they were likely to have used. |

They might have travelled by canal boats. It was mentioned on tv that out of work farm workers were forced to go to industrial areas to work in factories. |

mine moved from Berkshire to Wales and I've often wondered what mode of transport they used - they were ag labs so very poor and were actually fleeing Berkshire as my G Grandfather had been caught poaching rabbits which was a hanging offence at the tim |

Just to confirm about the rail links. Huddersfield in Yorkshire became an industrial town and had rail links by 1847, so by 1864 rail travel would have been the norm. Families would have travelled in the 3rd class on wooden benches-jl |

I would have thought that the father would probably gone on ahead to secure employment first before sending for the family once he had enough money for their fare. |
