Hello Madmeg

Point taken and I would normally never give up searching or leaving it on a back burner for a while. However it is clear that the Soller line ended here without any offspring.

Regards

Wot! You are giving up? Oh, no Tony, we don't do that. I am glad that you think Lindsey and I have done a lot (well mainly Lindsey), but the truth is out there somewhere.

Depends how keen you are to know the ancestry, and only you can decide that. So if you are keen, the first thing you do is get the marriage cert of Sophia Lissette and Edmund J Amos, and see what it says. We are struggling to find anything concrete without it.

But if you are happy to leave it as unsolved, that is your choice. Personally, I couldn't do that - it might just be that one family that leads you to something really interesting, like nobility or the church, or 1066.

Up to you, my friend. £9.25 might open up a whole new family. Or might do nothing for you.

Best wishes

Madmeg

Madmeg

Thank you for your continued interest in helping me. Sophia Lissette Soller was a gt aunt of mine and BMD shows that she married Edmund J Amos. I know little or nothing about him save what Lindsey and yourself have uncovered. The reason that I have tried to find out about him is that Sophia's brother Henry George had her recorded as his next of kin on his army record but with a surname Stephens. I couldn't find a marriage beween her and anyone named Stephens. As you have found, there was a lot anomalies with the usage of names by the Amos family. I think that Lindsey and yourself have done more than enough for me to show that Edmund Amos and Stephens were one of the same, but who, we'll never know?? Thank you very much for the time you have spent on this for me, it has been most useful. Tony

Can we go back to basics? Tony, could you please tell us, starting from 1901 census and then earlier, what you already have on Edmund, and where you have got it from? For example, is this him in 1901? - oops, I can't find him in 1901. He was 49 on his marriage to Sophia Soller, so is likely to have been previously married. Lindsey has a very likely marriage to Eliza in 1880, so is this them? Nope, cannot find in 1881.

Is this him in 1891? Oops, no record in 1891, 1881, 1871 or 1861. So he is not Edmund Amos.

What else do you know about him, for sure? Children? Siblings? Parents? I am reluctant to go further without more information.

HI Lindsey

Thank you. I have come across anomalies in names before but it seems weird that Edmund used Amos for his marriage. I guess it is something that cannot be explained. Thanks again. Tony

on the 1871 image it clearly says William Ames [Amos] Stephens

Hi there Lindsey

Thanks for the extra info. I think I can follow what has happened here, but cannot get my head around where the name Stephens entered the equation? Certainly on the BMD marriage records, Sophia Soller married Edmund James Amos, no mention of Stephens. On the 1871 census William Eagles Stephens' or Amos' wife may well have been Mary Ann Mann??

LIndsey, Jan, Mad Meg. Thank you all for your help. It seems strange how Sophia became known to her brother as Sophia Stephens, but the info you dug up at least points to how and probably why?? But as for the husband dropping Edmund for Edward who knows??

Thanks again

Lindsey and Madmeg. Thank you very much, seems strange that the surname Stephens should have come from a first name, but no record of Edmund James. Thanks again. Jan I am not sure of his occupation as have not looked backwards on him as of yet.
