Hi I wondered if anyone can tell me were to go next. I travelled to Birmingham Central library to look at any record I could find on my 2 x Great Grandmother, Margaret Franks. I know Margaret & her son Benjamin were in the Winston Green Asylum in 1881. I found Benjamin's cases notes in the male section , then a referrence to Margaret Franks in the female cases notes . Margaret's case number was in the 800's and appeared to have been entered in a different handwriting to the other enteries and the book stopped at page 300. I also searched the next two books but nothing I wondered if anyone has any knowledge of these records and could help me trace her records. Margaret other son Luther Frederick Franks (my Great Great grandfather was in Marston Green Cottage homes in 1881 and is next to be found in 1901 in Grimsby under the names Frederick Spencer & marries as Luther Frederick Spencer - Franks, the same year. I know its a long shot but can anyone help. I am really stuck, Marie.

Hi Jan This is Margaret's death, I think I will have to get the certificate. Although the case files are grim reading I would still like to trace them and find out why in 1871 they were a normal family with two servants and by 1881 the family were completley demolished, thank, Marie.

Birmingham City Archives
All Saints Mental Asylum (sometimes known as Winson Green Asylum)
The hospital records cover 1850 to 1974, but are not complete and much of the material is missing or has been destroyed before its transfer to the archives.
There is also an additional deposit, which is currently being fumigated. Please see staff for details. The minutes and accounts of the hospital will be found in the minutes of the Visiting Committee appointed by the City Council (these are uncatalogued).
They date from the appointment of the Birmingham Lunatic Asylum Committee in 1845 to 1948 when the National Health Service took over the running of the hospital.
