where were he in 1881 and 1891 census

Hi , My ggrand dad George William Smith 1873 - 1949 I cant find him in those 2 census. I got him in 1901 and 1911 by using his wife name. I know it is so common name!! I wonder if I get his death certificate will it help me more or not?
