thanks once again for your help. i cant find a marriage anywhere for frances and elijah so must presume they lived " over the brush".
james nixon hesford born 1885 cockermouth cumberland must be frances son. her maiden name was nixon and he appears on the other census with frances and elijah. benjamin hesford died 1879 so dont know who was the father of john nixon hesford .

thanks once again for all your help. if i find that john nixon hesford married in st helens then perhaps i can go to the librry next thursday when i am off and see who the parish register says was his father

I think Elijah dies in 1904, so it's just Frances in 1911... unfortunately I have no subs for that though.

Remember that Elijah may not have been born in USA as in the 1891 census his POB is unknown, I think he may have married a few years earlier than meeting Frances and hence no marriage for them.

this could be elijahs death in 1904 so he wouldnt be on the 1911 census but frances might still be alive

thank you all so very much. there was talk in the family about being related to a family called lavender but no one knew the connection.

so it seems strange that frances hesford born in cumberland marries someone from america and ends up in st helens lancashire.
dont suppose anyone could check the 1911 for me for elijah and frances lavender.

It seems odd that there is a birth reg'n for George Hesford in Cumberland in OND 1878, but none for George Hesford in the Prescot district, which covers St Helens.......yet there is a George on 1881 and 1891 censuses whose birthplace is given as St Helens

You may have to get the marriage cert for father's details
