I am not sure of the significance of the Page Number as nominated in the FREE BMD transcriptions.
To be a bit more specific, would twins both appear on the same page number ? I am looking at 2 boys, both registered Mar 1886,Beaminster - one on Vol.5a,P376,Jeffery-Samuel George , the other on Vol.5a,P378. Jeffery-William John.
I would appreciate a comment from the GR panel of experts.
Thanks,
Shirley.

well, we don't have a panel of experts!
just other members who know a little bit!!
The volume and page numbers shown on freebmd are the references used to find the entries in the volumes held at GRO (General Registry Office).
Each registration district has its own distinct volume number, the pages differ.
Twins should have the same volume and page number
It could possibly happen that one twin could be the last entry on one page, while the other twin is the first entry on the next page ......... thus the page numbers would be, eg, 101 and 102
It might possibly happen that one twin could have been registered separately from the other ..... maybe one was very sickly.
I did see a suggestion on the boards last week (wasit in answer to a similar question from you??) that a father might have rushed off to register the baby, without realising that there was another still in the womb.
I don't know whether anyone would be that eager to register a baby though ....... impatient to get ot the pub maybe!
If one twin was still born, it would of course not be registered under births. There is a stillbirth register. There should in that case be an indication o the birth certificate of the living twin that s/he was a twin ....... this is most commonly a statement as to the hour of birth.
But this is not an infallible determinant of a twin birth .... some registrars entered hour of birth even for a singleton.
If a twin had taken even one breath after birth and died, then it should have been registered both as born and died.
Of course ....... some babies did not get registered at all.
Have tou tried to find your boys in the 1891 Census?
Otherwise, I can only suggest that you buy the certificates and find out for certain sure whether they are twins, and why there might be the difference in page numbers. It really is the only way.

Thanks for the responses.
The Samuel George Jeffery was my husbands grandfather. We have his birth certificate and know of his whereabouts from the time of his birth. There is no sign of a brother in the family, but to be sure,we might have to obtain the birth certificate of the other lad [in order to eliminate the possibility of a still birth,or death at an early age].
Cheers,
Shirley.

Shirley,
Sometimes the time of birth is noted on the birth certificate in the case of twins. Do you have Samuel's birth certificate?

There were 92 births rego'ed 1886q1 in the 4 sub-rego offices in Beaminster RD (Beaminster; Evershot; Misterton; Netherbury). The nearest sub-office to Marshwood is Beaminster, 6m to the East. Since there's 2 GRO pages difference, Wm's at least 11 regos after Sam,so even is Beaminster gets half the rego's, that's abt a week later. Can't you just imagine Eliza schlepping the twins 6 miles to Beaminster, rego'ing Sam, thinking this is all too tiring - I'll just take the kids home and do William next week.

In answer to the page number. I agree that They should appear on the same page or next page, however the registry offices don't use that info anyway. They go by the other details that you give. They all have their own system for filing etc. Sister in law is a registrar and she told me that when I asked her to get me a birth cert. Hope that helps Cheryl

There wouldn't have been a registration in the case of a stillbirth.
The stillbirth register is comparatively new -certainly not applicable in 1886

Births Mar 1886 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFFERY Samuel George Beaminster 5a 376 JEFFERY William John Beaminster 5a 378
What was Samuel's ACTUAL birthplace? Who were his parents?

Many thanks for the responses.
Our Samuel George Jeffery was born to single mum Elizabeth Jeffery.
We have a copy of his birth certificate which shows Rego.District Beaminster,Sub-District Netherbury. His actual date-of-birth was 3rd Jan.1886. There is no time of birth noted. The "father" column is blank.
The reason for raising the question about a possible twin is that a researcher who contacted me was of the opinion that there might have been a twin. Our family oral history gave no indications of a twin for Samuel George, but best to check.

the only thing to do is to buy that certificate
That is the only way in which you will find the truth.
It's all guesswork ........ and we're all going round in little circles trying to help you when there is NO way of finding out other than buying the other certificate.

Sylvia's right - that's the only way to be certain. However, I'ld be comfortable enough passing on that one - I've better bets to chance 9.25 GBP on.
