Sue I would really miss you all & the thread if it shut down - it was all of you who kept me sane for many months I still get a lot of encouragement from you all

It is a group decision and I will abide with the majority

Cynthia - so sorry to hear about your sons father in law - its that time of year again - always a sad time of year the run up to Christmas.

Sally take no notice of the RR brigade - I stay away from a lot of the general boards now

I would miss GR if it did go - if they put the fee up then I would probably leave as I only use it for the friendship theses days as my tree is quite a way back

Sue we need to get working on your tree for you - get you into the 1600's

Take care all

Hello Friends

It has really heated up here in OZ ,very early for these temps it caught us all on the hop .

We usually have abit of time to get ready for Summer after the Winter storms but not this year.
We finished washing down the back patio yesterday,Barby is all clean and ready to go.
Anne nice to hear from you,you do leed a very busy life indeed,I find myself worrying about your cat situation...funny as I do not even like cats.

Cynthia that is terrible news of your Sons father In Law ,it must have been a shock to all of them and not to far off christmas :-(.

I have finished my Christmas shopping nice and early this year so now I can just relax a bit and enjoy the holidays for a change.

I know we are all busy ....do you all think it might be time to delete this thread ...I will if you all want to, I will miss what used to be a wonderfull happy Thread.

I will wait to see what you all want to do.

Sally don't let anyone bully you a lot of that is why Genes is heading South (in my Opinion that is along with the board police) very pleased to hear you are back that far,I seem to be stuck at 1770 with my main line so frustrating.
I hope you stay around

Happy to report my Emoticons appeared the other day so somethings are getting fixed.

Love to all my friends <3 :-D

Poor thread indeed and yes, I am guilty of neglect too Anne :-(

To be honest, the boards are so quiet these days that, whilst I always check in at least once, there are other things I could be doing. Wonder if this is the decline of GR???

Arthur, just be careful wielding that axe of yours....we don't need you to end up in A & E!!

Never having had a cat, I didn't realise that they could get up to so much mischief. You cat folks have certainly got your work cut out! It's exhausting just to read about it... :-D

I continue to be busy helping our friend's widow to sort out her move. Not sure when she will be in her new house but, at least, she now has a home to move to. Such a sad situation to be sure. :-(

I had a bit of a mishap whilst cleaning the other day! I usually pass the vacuum cleaner over the keyboard of my laptop to remove any stray crumbs etc. Whoooops....!! Off came 3 keys..... :-0 I had to rummage through the vacuum bag to retrieve them...that will teach me to be more careful. :-D

Had some sad news yesterday. My son phoned to tell me that his father-in-law had been found dead in bed. Such a shock for the whole family. He was a nice chap and only 72. :-(

On a happier note, I treated myself to a new smart phone last week. I seem to be finding my way around it - gradually........and it's fun being able to take pictures and be online etc. Small things amuse small minds I suppose! :-D

Must go - take care and love to all.....Cx <3

Neil came on Sunday - Saturday was appalling weather.

In less than 3 hours he reduced the tree to a stump. Now I think it will take me 3 months to chop the branches into useful logs and shred the smaller branches.

Tabitha

Tabitha Report 7 Nov 2013 13:33

I too am guilty of neglect - poor old thread - it use to be so busy - but not a lot happened - so waited for others

Cynthia - hope all goes well with the eye situation

Sue - I do envy you a warm Christmas - dont think I would want a baby around the house now - too many things to put out of reach

Arthur - good news about the tree & the logs

With all the wind & rain & loud bangs - haven't had a chance to sort out the meeting at the vets - but will try and arrange something soon.

Little shadow does not like the noise of the wind or fireworks - he retreated behind the sofa - I only saw him in the mornings as he was in hiding by the time i got home.

OH got him playing with his cosmic banana & cigar (full of cat nip) for a 10 year old cat he behaved like a kitten - dashing about all over the room - we have throws on the chair & he likes going underneath them. I saw the cover move & 4 little black paws sticking out - then all that was left was the curly tail – then he went for my bare feet. Apparently after 20 mins of mad play & dashing around he jumped on the computer seat & curled up – he was still there when OH came home 4 hours later & didn’t stir. OH left 2 hours later & he was still asleep when he got back 3 hours later. Dozy thing –

I was out for the evening last night with my friends. OH went to bed before I got home - I opened the front door – sneaked in & there was a very loud hiss from the lounge door & a little black face looked out at me – one paw in the air flexing claws. The guard cat was on patrol. Once he realised it was me i got a very nice welcome - it’s the first time he has had this situation – i expected to find him curled up with OH - anyway he had a good fuss & I went to bed - he woke me at 4am again - he seems to have an inbuilt clock that does not account for the clocks changing.

I have the day off tomorrow – so hope he goes back to sleep again otherwise we will have several early mornings in a row and leaving him alone for a while on Saturday – so will give him a good play time before we go out – hopefully no fireworks.

Take care all

Update on Ash tree.

My niece's husband will be coming this Saturday to cut down the rest of the tree. He will saw the trunk into manageable logs. Have fortunately found two people who will take all the logs, leaving only the small branches to be shredded

Anne - any news on Shadow?

Glad the fireworks are nearly over. My cats do not seem to be bothered, but I know that dogs can get very distressed.

Tis quiet on here indeed............awww...

I have to admit that I am guilty of neglect......but I have been so busy with many things that I hardly have time to turn round.

We went back to the hospital in Liverpool on Monday and, thankfully, the doctor is very pleased with the success of the operation. We're still not sure how much vision there will eventually be, but we will take it as it comes. :-)

I feel rather jealous of Sue getting ready for Summer when we are heading for Winter but....that's the way the world goes :-D

I have been busy helping my friends widow and daughter to pack up her home prior to moving and have been making lots of trips to charity shops etc. I feel so sorry for her :-(

Do hope everyone is keeping well....and it's still good to meet up on here even though it is a bit hit and miss.

Love to all.....Cx. <3

Hello Friends

Seems are poor little thread is very quiet now,I hope you are all well.

Just finished getting all the lawn sprinklers up and running for Summer ,over Winter they tend to get blocked up with sand and the like but they are all good now just replaced a few that have been in the ground since 9 years ago so well and truly got our monies worth out of them.

It has cooled off a bit the last few days ,it was too warm too early anyway but I think we will have a hot Christmas worst luck :-(

Grt Grandaughter had another sleep over on Monday night,it is so lovely having a baby around again .

Well I had better get back to my housework:-(

Anyway weather starting to heat up,it is very hot today 32c when it comes in quick it hits us all hard to start with then are bodies starts to get used to it ...still to hot for me.:-(

Sylvia I am using your motives to do my Emoticons,I do wish genes would get their problems fixed though.

Anne I can't see where the old owners of the cat can reclaim it after all that time ,they would be very nasty if they did and it would not be fair on the cat either as it sounds like it has come to love you both.

Hope Reece is doing OK .

Sally hope all is well with you too.
Has anyone heard from Evelyn,I did notice a bit more on her father Robert,I hope it helps .

UK has just had some nasty storms stay safe everyone .

- Anne

Hope you are successful with Shadow.

Hope everybody came through the storm unscathed. Unfortunately I was not so lucky.

A very large - 60+ft - Ash straddling the boundary with my neighbour split in two. Fortunately the huge section fell down and across and came to rest with the leaves brushing the glass in my greenhouse. There is another very large branch hanging from the tree. Main worry is if the remaining trunk falls up the garden as it will demolish another greenhouse, cause severe damage to my garage or my neighbour's recently built summerhouse. On the bright side it missed my new shed and recently erected greenhouse

On checking with the insurance company have been told I am not covered for removal of the tree as it did not damage a building.

Waiting to talk to my neighbour and it is possible that his 2 sons and my nephew will be able to cut the tree down. Another possibility is to get my niece's husband, a tree surgeon, to come but he lives in Swindon over 100 miles away.

To make matters worse my phone cut off in mid call and was down for several hours. Contacting BT online proved to be a totally useless and frustrating exercise - I will never get back those 80 minutes.

Tabitha Report 25 Oct 2013 13:38

Sue - Get Well soon -

Cynthia - glad your OH is on the mend - sounds like my eye situation - weht here there & everywhere so quickly - was in a daze

Arthur - there are so many more records on the Internet now & if you find a person someone has on a tree - it can spread like wildfire.

I tend to make a note of it all & then try & track down the original records when I get the chance - just to reconfirm - it gets very hard when its past 1537.

In the case of nobility you can always check the encyclopaedias. I must admit I found one line & it was the same info on 3 different databases and nearly the same on the Wiki.

My Latin was quite good & old style writing was getting easier as we use to look at a lot of original documents at Canterbury before the place shut down – we were there every other week.

Family search has got a lot better now – very easy to use & read - but you do need to check the info as sometimes it can be very wrong

I love my Ancestry one as they have excellent access to records and I like their tree & how to search for information.

I still have some credits on Find my Past, but don’t need them at the moment as well past 1837 but very useful if I can afford it will get some Death certs.

Rootsweb seems quite good and its free - but you do need to check the info as sometimes it’s very strange.

The only one I personally don’t find very useful is The Genealogist - they don’t seem to have the records for the areas I need – I have had a couple of free trials over the last 5-6 years.

Regarding Shadow – sort of success – she has just agreed we can meet at the vets – not sure if she still wants me to get references to show we are animal lovers and suitable new parents for him.

The little fella has put on weight (well he would living with us) and has a lovely coat as my OH brushes him daily - lots of toys & the run of the house – and he cuddles up to us. He decides where to sleep etc. As my friend in the office Said he chose us & has stayed with us for 6 months now (3 weeks in the garden) and has taken over the home. He orders us about something chronic. She hasn’t seen Him for 18 months - so hopefully he won’t make that much of a fuss of her - but you never know with cats.

Any way must get back to work - will discuss the other catastrophe with our home computer chair

Take care all

Cynthia

Always good to have some good news.

It must have been very worrying for you and your husband. I am so glad that the op seems to have sorted the problem.

Josie
Having hit a brick wall at 1750, I am intrigued how you have managed to get so far back in time, being so far from the records. You cannot pop down to the local Records Office.
Have you any hints on how to find early information - and how did you read early writing.

Ann
What is the situation with Shadow? Hope he is now firmly in your home.

Hi everyone.....just trying to catch up with the news on here.

Hope you soon feel better Sue........it's a horrible thing to have. <3

Wow Josie......I can well imagine that you are over the moon with your discoveries.....do we have to curtsey before we talk to you now........? :-D

I've had a bit of a time with OH. He had a problem with an eye last week and on Friday, when he say the optician, we were advised to go to Manchester Hospital right away!!! Our son drove us over when he had finished work. When we got there, they told us to go to our local eye clinic on Monday.

So, we went to the local one on Monday and, after examining him, decided to send us to Liverpool.......we went there yesterday not knowing what was going to happen. However, it was decided that he had to have an op more or less there and then - so he did! He was allowed home afterwards though and we went back this morning to have the eye checked.

The doc was very pleased with the result and we return there in 10 days but, my word, what a few days that has been :-0 :-0 :-0

Now I have to catch up with some neglected tasks.

Take care and love to all......Cx. <3

Hello Friends

I can't believe how long it has been since I posted on here sorry folks .

I have been in bed since last friday with the flue ,this cold weather has still not left us yet a few sunny days in between but still cold at night and rain ,we have definitely caught up with that and not far off the average for the year so that is good for water storage for summer.

Sally what wonderful news re your Hubby ,I am so happy for you , happy anniversary being it late ,nice to hear some good news for a change not much of that around the world of late.

Josie lovely to hear from you too,you have a wonderful array of rellies very impressive ,I suppose we have to bow to you now.
My Welsh rellies always said we were a descendant of the royalty but I can't see any evidence of that .

Hi sylvia and Cynthia ,Reece if you are looking in .
I did notice that a Diane has come on to Evelyns thread with more on Robert so that may help clear up a few things, fingers crossed for that one.

I am off Christmas shopping today, going to get it out of the way early this year ,give me a bit more time to put up my Chrissy lights.

Love a best wishes to you all.

Edit
Still no smiling faces yet ,Do wish Genes would get this site working properly

Josie - how wonderful with the tree - sorry to hear about your "Pain"

Did that with My OH Tree - so you may be related to him somewhere in the 11th -13th Century. His were all landed gentry & people of interest.

At present I have stopped on mine to try & do some more of his. One of my goodness knows how many greats grandmothers was the Aunt to Anne Boleyn. which is very funny because i always felt very attached to her since childhood & loved doing that era in history - so could be a Genes link. I really want to get into more depth but no time at the moment.

Must go asmneed to get back to work

take care all

Kiwibird Report 21 Oct 2013 23:15

Congratulations Sally I hope you and your OH had a great anniversary.

Old, loved hearing about your cats Nicky and Vicky it reminded me of the 2 Cats we had when we first got married.(Brothers) Whiskey & Sherry.

Whiskey was the defender and even as a kitten took on the neighbours Ginger Tom.. While Sherry was the hunter.

One night Whiskey was asleep in the lounge and I heard Sherry at the door so went to let him in.
He raced passed me and I noticed a couple of legs hanging from his mouth and before I could sent him back outside with his catch he had gone up to his brother who was on the couch and deposited a dead bird in front of him
then he slunk off under a table and I realised he had a second dead bird for himself.
I was gobsmacked.

Am finally recovering from a pinched sciatic nerve in my right leg. I was off work for week and a half. Initially I thought the pinching had occurred in my lower back but after nearly a week of extreme pain discovered it was in fact my arthritic knee that is causing the problem.

My doctor said I needed knee replacements 5 years ago, but said I could not have knee replacement surgery until my knees are totally stuffed. I saw her earlier this year and she told me that replacements only last 15 years and you can only have 2 done and that
I was too Young !!! to have my knees done,
regardless that I do not qualify for a pension until I am 66 and still have to work for another 10 years. I need a replacement now :-S

If I had medical insurance which I can not afford
I could have had them done at any age,
but it seems in the public system here in NZ that you have to be 80 and bedridden before they will consider it
and even then they will decide that you are to old :-| and it's not worth the cost :-( :-(

I have resigned myself to the fact that I will just have to push through the pain everyday and hope I can make it to retirement.

On a happier note My tree research is going in leaps and bounds.
I originally joined Genes in 2005 to build a tree and research my Maternal Grandfather's line.
After 6 months I hit a brick wall and decided to try and extend the tree a cousin had done for my Maternal Grandmother.

Over the years I have worked on this line on my Husbands Family, My Fathers Dutch family . and Occasionally I go back and have another Stab at my Grandfathers line. I did have success eventually on his Father's side going back to the 11th century.
But had done little on his Mother's side The Barlows of Stockport, Cheshire. Bricklayers and building labourers.

Now that I have an ancestry Subscription I decided to have a go at seeing if I could go back further with my Barlow Great Grandparents then the 1800's.

Well the other day SUCCESS :-D :-D
You may think I am mad, but at the moment I am like a little kid in a sweet shop.

My 19 century Lancashire/Yorkshire ancestors were all cotton mill workers/bricklayers/ blacksmiths, and ag labs. And I did not expect earlier generations to be other than farmers or serfs.

What a surprise I got :-0
Not only was my 8x great grandfather a Knight but Sir Alexander Barlow was Lord of The Manor living at Barlow Hall in Chorlton cum Hardy, near Manchester, the Family lived there for 400 years before it was sold in 1777. (Its now a Golf Club)

I thought Wow!! I come from landed gentry .
But it keeps getting better Through my Barlow Great Grandmother's going back to 1300. I am related to most of the great families of England,The Stanleys,The Parkers, Spencers, Churchills.
As well as some famous and notorious figures in English History
two that I have discovered are Francis Tresham who Provided the money for the 'Gunpowder Plot' and sent his brother in law an anonymous letter warning him about going to the house of lords on Nov 5th. He was arrested after Guy Fawkes confessed and he died in the Tower of London.

My 13 x great grandmother was the Mistress of Cardinal Wolsey close aide to Henry V111 after he rose in prominence she was an embarrassment to him and after giving him 2 illegitimate children he had her Married to my 13x ggfather.

I have always loved English History and so am blown away that I have a connection with the people I read about as a child.

If you don't see me for a while, you will know where I am busy climbing in My Family Tree
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Take care catch you all later Josie <3 <3 <3 :-) :-) :-) ;-)
