Hi all

I wore ear plugs!

Sue ...... we bought an upright freezer a year ago ....... it's much easier on the back!!

I got tired of having to hang head downwards over the edge to see what was right at the bottom of the chest freezer .... so when it started to give up the ghost, out it went.

Well, we had had it for about 20 years, and we got it second hand from a friend who'd had it about 10 years!

Raining this morning.

OH starts rehearsals tonight for the last Student Opera of the season ........ Magic Flute, his favourite. The performance opens in early June. They're actually a month later than usual in doing the last show ............ alll because of the Olympics back in February.

There was a Cultural Olympics associated with the "real" Olympics ....... and all normal activity of the winter season was postponed.

The Graduation Ceremonies begin at the university tomorrow (Wednesday) ....... there are 23 ceremonies spread over the week days from tomorrow to the following Wednesday. That means 4 a day on most days.

OH is the Student Marshall, and goes to every single one of them! He gets all dressed up in his doctoral gown and hood from Liverpool Uni ....... they're a lovely bright red.

off to mooch around

Hi folks - I'll send Tina a pm to help her out.

Cooler today and much nicer to be honest. Had quite a busy morning at my volunteer desk today and oohed and aahhed over a 2day old baby. So sweet.

Sue, I have an upright these days....much better on the old back!!

So how was Victoria Day with you Sylvia? I said, how was Victoria Day with you [just in case you have gone deaf with the cannon fire]. lol

Back later - school run and probably tennis..arrghhh.

THE ANVIL SALUTE

The first capital of British Columbia was a town called New Westminster. They had a cannon which they used to give the 21 gun salute to Queen Victoria on her birthday.

The government decided in 1859 that New Westminster would no longer be the capital of the Province, and named Victoria on Vancouver Island as capital.

They also decreed that only the city of Victoria would be allowed to give the 21 gun salute to Queen Victoria on her birthday.

To make sure that this was the case, the authorities took away New Westminster's cannon.

Not to be outdone, the then-mayor of New Westminster devised a new methhod of saluting the Queen

He was a blacksmith, who had one anvil in his smithy.

He found a second anvil

Got a load of black powder.

Put a charge of powder on top of one anvil, then placed the second one on top of the powder.

They lit a charge on the end of a long pole, and pushed it towards the powder

BANG!

Top anvil goes flying

Repeat 21 times

This ceremony is still performed on Victoria Day in new Westminster ............ with the men all dressed in the garb of 100+ years ago.

They have only missed doing the anvil salute once since it began in 1860 ........ that was the year Victoria died.

just realised I had not called in ...... or else my post went into the sunset!

Quite a cool Victoria Day here. Oh well ....... we hadn't planned to go away anyway.

I have a thought about who I want to be .... unfortunately I'm going to have to do some digging (or ask Janey) 'cos I can't remember the names of any of the women I'm thinking of.

That sounds daft doesn't it??

I shall fly into either Liverpool or Manchester

anyone made contact with Wayne?

see you all tomorrow

Hi everyone. Nice to see you're all still chatting away.

Cynthia - I've never been to Bolton and do not think she has ever told me the name of an area. All I can give you is a Post Code - BL3 3TG. Perhaps I should look at Google Earth - or maybe ask her in tomorrow's e-mail.

Taking the doggies walkies now before retiring. Nice, quiet and relaxing.

Goodnight all.

I don't miss much Frank! Have to say I was actually impressed by your efforts back there.

Hi Josie, I only know Oswaldtwistle and Colne vaguely - they both have outlet stores there! Sounds like you have an interesting history line though. Do you still have family living around the north west?

Evelyn, strawberries and tomatoes in abundance would be gratefully received - you know how much those men eat!
I'll arrange a taxi from the airport for you.

Well Anne, you seem to have survived the weekend intact - it must be lovely to be beside the seaside when the weather is like this.

Jeannie, I live about 15 minutes away from Bolton! Which part of Bolton does your sister live?

Sorry you can't join us Catherine but it's nice to know that you will be thinking about us.

Sending little waves ~~~~ to Robert in his shell.
I think I will have a 'quiet' room at my party for those of a more retiring nature.

FRANK06 Report 24 May 2010 20:04

Nothing personal Anne,

Just don't ask where the harpies & harlots came from as I was only trying to back up the venerable Robert's wish to be at peace. I'm quite sure there was no one in my thoughts when that came to me, perhaps a little poetic license

Think I'll just mosey along while it's still quiet and Cynthia hasn't noticed..........

"A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse........ "

Run ;)

Sorry Cynthia but as I'm going to be away for a week I don't think that I'm going to make your party.
BUT..........................
As it seems to be fancy dress, I will be the ghost of Marie Antoinette, so that I can be with you all in spirit.

Have a lovely party ..................and don't do anything I wouldn't do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love

Well I'm delighted to be a part of this happy band Evelyn. You certainly come from all over. See Cynthia is probably nearer to my sister in Bolton than I am down here in Hampshire.

I'll be popping in from time to time to see how you're all doing when I'm not ferreting around looking for family members.

HAPPY BANK HOLIDAY SYLVIA

Oh Frank - what a surprising person you are - that was a very good poem - I appreciate the poetry & prose but not sure i like being called a harpie or harlot - I am sure that wasn't your original idea either as you are normally such a gentleman on the thread.

I would tread gently at the party - beware hidden rolling pins.

Nice to see you Catherine (are you going to the party?) - Evelyn have a good visit with the hairdresser - don't be a stranger.

I have to admit - I haven't had the chance to get a characher sorted out - I am out tonight - so will have to work on something over the next couple of days.

Its so lovely here in Brighton - clear Blue sky - very little breeze and today at lunchtime it was 26 degrees outside. I seem to have caught the sun yesterday & was only out for a few mins at a time.

See you all tomorrow - Take care all

Greetings to all from sunny Paris!!

What a lovely holiday weekend we've had over here. Pity I've spent most of it paving the terrace at the front of the house, but my daughter is here on a visit which has cheered me up no end.

The birds are singing and there's a gentle breeze blowing through the trees and all is well with the world. Hope you are all feeling the same!

Off to England for a week tomorrow but will check in when I get back.

Love to all!

Come on girls and boys no fighting please.
It is a glorious day here in Guernsey beautiful sunshine and not a cloud in the sky.
I shall go to the hairdressers later in the day so she can tidy up my unruley hair, I hope I can stop sneezing before that, I have just been out in the garden and Ron has mowed the lawn I guess that is what is causing the problem.
I shall fly to Manchester Cynthia you will have to send me directions from there, there are lots of strawberries and tomatoes about at the moment so I shall bring plenty of them among other things.
How nice that we have attracted some new friends, I am pleased to meet you all.
Love to everyone

Hi KiwiBird. Thanks for the welcome. Popped in to say good morning or goodnight to those off to bed.

Late last night received an e-mail from an actual blood relative who contacted me recently. Have been sending her info and her reply said that she had found the marriage record of her gt. gt. grandfather and noticed that my grandfather was a witness at the wedding "and I was quite taken with that". So it's not just old fogies such as I that get a buzz out of discovering things our parents probably never knew.

Have a good day, evening or night as appropriate.

Welcome Jeanie nice to have you with us.

Hi Cynthia My Riley Family between 1700 and 1840 were living around Huncoat, Church and Oswaldwistle. Then moved to Colne, Trawden and Winewall area 1840 onwards. My Grandfather was born in Trawden and emigrated to NZ in1928.
My Birtwistle [Granddad's Paternal side] were given land in Huncoat by the Normans And they built Huncoat Hall in the twelfth century. The Family Sold the Hall in the late 17th century and moved to the Colne area.
The Hall still exists, have seen recent photos of it is now a farm and is pretty run down.

Have been busy getting clues organised for my Famous person. I am not going to make it easy.

Venerable Robert, loverly to see you out and about just watch out for Frank though,
he seems to want to invade from the North and take over your shell.

By the way Frank
just because it's in a quote does not mean you can get away with calling us women 'Harpies and Harlots' BE WARNED ROLLING PINS ARE AT THE READY IF NECESSARY .

Sorry Sylvia to hear your Holiday weekend is cold and miserable. the weather is no better here.

Off to make Dinner,
Catch you all later Josie
