FRANK06 Report 19 Oct 2010 22:26

Cynthia,

Do you miss me as much as your savoury pies..............

I am just pleased to be back at work after an exhausting ten days with the grandchildren, our daughters and the American in-laws.
Young Sophia has already got two teeth and little Nieve is working on hers already, slabbering all over the place.....do you have slabbering in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand?
It's amazing how they switch from happy smiley to screaming and chewing their wee hands, then back to happy smiley.

Nieve is being given Ashton Parson's teething powders which I'm told are only available in Britain but seem quite effective while Sophia is equally happy with Homeopathic teething granules from the USA.

The wedding went well as did the christening which was held in the old fogies club which is doubling as our church while it's rebuilt..
Our new church actually burnt down the night before my daughter's wedding so it was just as well she had not chosen to marry there!!

That's us booked our flights to Washington for christmas and my OH is quite pleased as it's five years since we had christmas together with our eldest daughter........now we have to split ourselves in two!

Well, we'll have New year in Scotland.

By the way Cynthia, it's alright to talk to yourself as long as you don't answer back..............

" Be cheerful.........Strive to be happy "

I don't envy you that mess Sylvia but I am sure it will be worth it in the long run. I can't remember where I have put anything anyway so don't fret....lol

Hi Josie, good to have you back. ;)) I have sent Paul a pm to try and explain things a little. Have a feeling he may not look for a reply on here somehow. I only sent him one of my messages this week so I think he is a new member to the boards.

Sue, yes, we have guessed that you love your garden......and it's lovely to hear how things are growing....maybe we should call you Mary as in Mary, Mary, quite contrary? Glad your dad is okay.

Anne....that was a journey and a half wasn't it? Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when you shoved him into the car. Sounds like there was a lot of muttering going on.....oh dear. Work seems the better option I agree.

Voluntary job and grandchldren for me today. They are on half term next week and are going away so we will have a break.....I'll miss them though. Granddaughter is getting very confident in making crumbles and custard - we have them each time she comes!! She and her granddad love them but I prefer savoury pies.

Wonder where our boys have got to? No Wayne this week and no Frank for a while. The Venerable Robert is warily watching from a distance. Do hope they speak to us soon.

Take care all. Love. C.

Afternoon all - a breathing space at last

The sun is out - bit breezy but salt air is good for you

Lots of people popping in & out then

Good to see you Josie - sorry you had a bit of a time family wise.

Sorry to hear your loss Sylvia

Glad you are back home now Sue

Cynthia buzzing around a lot as usual - have a rest dear.

Nice to see you pop in & out Robert - do come back again soon

Had a very eventful Saturday visiting in-laws

We left home as normal around 8am - stopped for Breakfast (little treat) back on the motorway & all came to a stop (for 20 mins or so) not a clue why.

Started off and then they flashed up M26 closed (not our way - but made M25 a lot busier) then there was a problem on the M20 - even busier - took ages to get through the Tunnel & off we went again.

Loads & loads of roadworks so speed reduced - we didn't think we were going to get there - but we did. Mum had laid on a couple of sandwiches & a sauage roll for us as we were going to eat in the evening.

Well we like to eat early so we leave around 4;30 at the latest to drive to the restaurant - well we started trying to get them motivated and on the move around 4 (it takes a while) by 4:45 they started moving - OH muttering etc. We went off with dad to get petrol & Mum & sister "Went Shopping" OH nearly exploded & was muttering away all down the road.

We got to the restaurant at 5:40 - waited 15 mins for the other 2 to arrive - went in to the restautant to find it was full - nearly an hour wait for a table.

Oh already blown a gasket by now - so mum suggests - lets go back to town & find somewhere else - OH exploded - it took 20 mins to get here - 20 mins back look for a restaurant - faff around & we may eat by 9 - goodness only know what time we will get home - he was just about to start again when I shoved him in the car.

We decided not to eat & just go home as we were a quarter of the way there anyway - great debate with family over lack of food etc - we said goodbye & left - the wrong way out of the car park & took 10 mins to get back to the road. My fault he went the wrong way to the exit. Him still moaning etc.

Then we got to the bridge & we all stopped - loads of traffic - 35 mins later we were motoring again - then we hit heavy traffic & all slowed down again - at last on the M23 all going better & we ground to a halt just outside Pease Pottage. 40 mins later one lane moved - 20 mins and we all started going in to the slow lane - and then we were diverted - & off we went. We got home eventually a lot later than we expected & no food as it was too late to cook - so nibbled a biscuit or 2.

Anyone wonder why we actually bothered at all - it was a nightmare.

Came back to work for a rest

Well talk of work - I had better get back to the joys of this wonderful job.

Take care all - hope everyone is keeping fit & healthy.

Hi Everyone

So sorry I have been missing but I am trying to catch up with all my work at home it did get away from me a bit I am afraid.

Josie I hear another aftershock in your neck of the woods you seem to be getting alot of earthquakes latey,I bet you will be glad for it all to end.

We are expecting a storm tonight ,we can do with the rain I can tell you it is so dry here.

I don't know how we are going to get through a long Summer.

Sylvia that Turkey Chicken and Duck sounds very tasty,I might try that myself for our Chrissy meal,I get sick of the same old thing on the 25th of Dec.

By the way my wepping Flowering Cherry tree is beautifull since I put it in a half round wine barrell it is out in bloom at the moment and looks a picture.
The place I had it in the garden bed along with the Roses I have put a flowering Peach tree that too is out in bloom.
You can probably tell I love my garden.

The rain has just started so I hope it teams down all night.

Dad is Ok still seeing two of everything but the Doctor has giving him a patch to put over one eye at a time so he only sees one of everything, says it will take a few weeks to get back to normal,he was very lucky I think.

Paul please feel free to join us you are more than welcome.

Going to get myself a drink ,time for a rest I think.

talking to oneself is the first sign of ...............................

:))))

The friends are not coming to stay, or even visit. Phew!!

When she phoned on Friday, they were considering not bringing their car over, so I think the question was "Would OH meet them from the ferry?". However, by last night, they had decided to bring their car, drive up to the Celebration of Life, then back to the ferry for the 5:45 pm ferry.

It's going to be at least 2 weeks before we're back using the kitchen ........ the cabinet maker told OH yesterday that he should be ready to bring the cabinets over on Thursday this week .... but OH is not sure if he will be in that day. The counter tops hopefully will be delivered early next week. The cabinet maker will come back to install them and cut the hole for the sink. Then we have to arrange for the electrician and the plumber to come back.

We're using local tradespeople, not one company, OH is doing a wonderful job of the contracting of jobs. BUT it is harder to coordinate the work into one short spurt.

It isn't too bad though ....... we decided not to change the fridge and stove. The stove is only 3 years old and the fridge 2 years old, and I felt no need to change them. It would have been different if I had wanted a cook top and separate oven, but I'm quite happy and comfortable with a regular stove. So we can cook and keep food just as we normally do.

The place is just in a bit of a mess!!

and we keep forgetting where we have moved this or that!

Unspoken is the problem of painting ................ OH has a great tendency to get things to usable state, and then put off doing the finishing touches. J said yesterday that if "Dad" hadn't done the painting by the time they came out here next, she and M would do it for us.

They don't plan on coming out here until summer 2012!

OH went to the dentist again this morning, and had surgery again

The one-sided hamster is back

Only this time it is the other cheek

The dentist told him to eat soft food for about 3 days, and not to chew on this side until the stitches come out in 7-9 days

Major problem

he can't chew on the other side either 'cos there are not enough "meeting" teeth!

We're having an omelette for dinner tonight

Daughter phoned just before we went out for coffee this afternoon .........

She offered to send OH some of the food she's preparing for MJ who is now just beginning "proper" food, and said they would have a plentiful supply of such food at Christmas if necessary

She was laughing away as she planned all this

OH did not think it was sooooooooo funny when I told him :)))

Good heaven's, I'll be talking to myself soon!

Had quite a good meeting re raising awareness of autism today. Trouble is, there is so much talk from so many departments that it's no wonder it takes so long to get things done.

Yesterday was certainly manic for me. Daughter woke with a migraine so she was poorly sick for most of the day.

I was out most of the morning but managed to get the evening meal sorted. In the afternoon we went to watch our son's young football team play locally. Sadly they lost by a couple of goals but it was a good game. I'm so proud of the work my son does with these kids.

They came back for a meal (son and family not the whole team!) and I finally sat down at around 7.30pm. whew!

Off to see the Parkinson's nurse with OH on Wednesday. I never enjoy hospital visits at the best of times but they have to be endured. He does go on a 'go slow' at times and I hope they will be able to give him a booster med which I understand they do for people with this condition.

There is a thread on either Chat or General re Parkinson's at the moment. Between that and autism, I sometimes don't know whether I am coming or going to be honest. It can get a bit hairy at times.

Well, it's almost electric blanket time but I feel the need to raid the kitchen.......might nip over to Sylvia's to see how her kitchen is progressing :))

Take care all. Love. Cx.

Hi everyone, a quick visit before bed. Sorry about your probs Josie, hope things look much brighter for you all soon.

It's nice to have your house back to yourselves sometimes I quite agree Sue. Hope your dad is okay. Must have been a shock for you.

Condolences to you and OH on the loss of your friend Sylvia. Going quietly in one's sleep is sometimes a blessing but a shock for those around. Hope all goes well with the Celebration.

First teeth......teething...can't we just all remember that! Shudders at the thought. Teeth can be a pain from beginning to end in some cases can't they? They can also be expensive.

Just got OH to put my electric blanket on so will go and test it very soon - I have been on the go since 7am so am a little...........tired!

Hi all.

We're having some glorious Fall weather ...... bright blue skies and sun. It is getting down to 4 or 5C overnight and upto 13C or so during the day.

Josie ... good to see you back. Sorry to hear aout the family problem.

Sue ..... you most certainly never know what is going to happen next!

and I missed Robert's visit!!

We eat out most Friday evenings at one of two local places. Last Friday we went to the "bistro" and they had terducken on the menu ..... this is the latest thing here.

One local butcher was advertising it for Thanksgiving last weekend, and wanted 2 days notice because it is so time consuming to make it. The bistro was making their own.

It is a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside a turkey, with layers of stuffing between each one. The birds are cut open down the breast and all the bones removed, then the turkey is laid flat, a layer of stuffing placed over it, the duck laid flat on top of that, a layer of stuffing, the chicken laid flat on top, a layer of stuffing spread on top. Then they are either rolled up or formed into a semblance of a turkey.

I would have loved to have tried it, but wasn't quite hungry enough! It wasn't a bad price ................ $20 (ca £12 or so) for the meal with a potato and yam mash and veggies, or $25 for their special 3 course meal.

I talked to J earlier .... they're all well, although MJ is cutting his first tooth. Seems to be reacting by being "not quite his usual self". They had a big nor'easter storm go through on Friday and Saturday.

OH is "working" this weekend ....... at the Apple Festival at the Garden. They buy their apples in from local growers, preferably organic growers, and NEVER have the kind that you buy at the supermarket! I think they have something like 60 varieties on sale this year!

The flooring looks good ..... but it's one of those things that looks different colours in different lights, or where there are shadows, and is almost impossible to photograph to get a true indication!!

Our friend G died quietly in his sleep, so a huge shock for his wife and family. Iain spoke briefly to MA on Friday, and said she was just devastated. She was about 4 years older than G, so is 80 or 81.

His Celebration of Life is on Tuesday afternoon. We came home on Friday to find a message on the answer machine from last weekend's party girl to say "can we make a deal for Tuesday? I'll phone you at a later time".

She still hasn't phoned ....... but I know they will undoubtedly be coming over for the memorial.

I think what she is going to suggest is that they come to the house and then we combine cars ................ we are actually between the ferry terminal and where the memorial will be held, so it makes perfect sense, and we have done it many times before.

I'm just going to have to say "Fine. Great idea. Just close your eyes as you walk through the living and dining rooms. And please use our bathroom, not the guest one"!!!!! :)))))

Take care everyone

Hi Everyone

Its been a busy weekend many visitors but they have all gone back home now and the house is nice a quiet.

Just heard from my dad today I have not spoken to him for about two weeks he tells me he had a mild stroke on Thursday that was a bit of a shock it has left him with double vision.
The doctors says it will return to normal in about four weeks I hope they are right.
He says he can't play Golf as he see's two balls instead of one so his game has suffered a bit ,good he can still joke about it.

I am going up to Perth for the weekend next week spend a bit of time with him .

Sad news about your Oh's friend Sylvia ,you never know do you when it is that time .
A person we know well had talked his mate and his wife into buying the block of land next to his house and land so they could spend a good ten or so years together as couples ,they all went out to a meal to toast the good news ,at the end of the night this man went home and fell down the stairs and broke his neck ,this friend of ours is just in shock all the plans they had and it is all gone.

Josie it is warming up here as well but it is way to soon for Summer yet,not looking forward to Summer if it is going to be a long one can barely manage the four or so months we get now for Summer.
Still can't stop the weather can we.

Hi Robert nice to hear from you.

Off for a long bath.

Hi Everyone,
have emerged from my shell where I have been for the last number of weeks due to a very serious family situation that knocked me for six. Live is looking a lot brighter now.

I wish I could say the same about the Weather here in NZ Spring so far has been one storm after another and continuous Rain and gale force winds.

One storm front early in September caused such a massive snowfall down south that a 10 year old, 3 thousand seat Sports Stadium had it's roof cave in luckily the 30 people inside at the time escaped.

The temperatures are starting to get a little warmer but most days it's like having 4 seasons in one day.

My OH and I are going 'Downtown' in a few hours to a concert with Petula Clark. really looking forward to it.
this will dare I say it be only the 2nd live concert we have gone to in the last 25 years.
In Feb we went to hear Cliff Richards and the Shadows.
We used to go regularly to concerts before we had children. Finnaly they are adults now. And my Baby [all six foot 2 of him] has now turned 21. So this year we have been making an effort to do things together we enjoyed when we where younger.
It takes a lot of effort though.
I can remember as a teenager wishing I was grown up so I could go out at night now as a grown up
I would much prefer to stay home and go to bed.
Life is so unfair.

Take Care everyone catch you all later. Josie

Quite a pleasant unhurried day. Dentist (again) with OH. New specs for me. Lunch out. Over to a shop I love for two adult beanie type pouffes for the grandchildren to sit on. Playing about on here!

Mind you, I did clean the bathroom tiles today. Have a new mop from Lakeland (I love their stuff), so had to experiment with it didn't I?

Time for bed. Hope everyone is well. Love. Cx.

What a dreadful accident you described Wayne.....it must have been absolutely dreadful for everyone involved. I always feel sorry for the emergency services who have to deal with things like that as they must see some horrible accidents.

It IS nice to be back in one's own home isn't it Sue? My OH uses that as an excuse for not going away though.....can't win with some folk.

Anne, you must have been dumbstruck at the comments from your m-i-l. I know several older folk who drive and just hope that they have the sense to give up when it becomes necessary.

Wish we could get photos on here so that we could watch Sylvia's kitchen progressing. They didn't suggest that your fridge and stove had grown whilst you had had them did they??

Much quieter today here today. Yesterday was absolutely frenetic for me. The thing which nearly finished me off was when my 11 year old grandson asked me which nursing home I was going into 'when the time comes' ????

Arghhhhhh.

I was somewhat comforted by the fact that his sister said she would get a room next to me because she didn't want me to be on my own!! Bless her.

Sent a message to Josie - she has had a lot on lately and will be back soon hopefully.

Off for a browse. Love to all. Cx.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Oct 2010 19:27

Hi everyone

We had a wonderful time on Sunday at the party .... the sun came out and it was warm enough to be out in the garden as the party girl had hoped.

Anne ..... she had to take a driving test as she had turned 80, and was given a licence for 5 years, then she has to be re-tested (unless doctor advises otherwise at some point during that time)

We got home on Monday to news that one of OH's old colleagues had died on Sunday.

G was about 77, had diabetes (and lost a leg because of it about 5 years ago) ......... and not only was he a very good botanist, but he was also the world's expert on Rachmanninov discography (which I think means all the cds, records, etc ever put out of a composer's works). It seems that he died in his sleep.

On Tuesday OH got a phone call from G's son-in-law to ask if he could help arrange for the flag to be flown at half-mast on the university campus next Tuesday, the day they are having the memorial service. That has led to the university people asking OH to produce some information on G that can be provided on their daily information sheet.

He was busy working on that yesterday morning in his university office when his hard drive "blew up" ..... so they are buying him a new computer ........ but he has had to finish the stuff on G, and an obituary to go in the departmental newsletter, here at home today because it is wanted for Friday.

It was a beautiful sunny Fall day yesterday, today ............ rain and much colder!

Huge noises in the kitchen now as the men have started laying the floor .......

First problem .......... old tiles not completely level, but worked out it will be against the wall under one of the cabinets, so the cabinet maker will shim the new cabinet.

Second problem ......... fridge and stove wouldn't go out through either of the door arches (no doors on either). Can't understand that as both of them came in through one of the arches only a couple of years ago! Anyway, the men are moving the appliances from one end of the kitchen to the other as needed.

Third problem .............. they discovered that the estimator forgot to order the glue for sticking down the vinyl. Solution .......... wait for them to order it, and 5 days before they could come back. OR for OH to drive down to a store and buy it, then get refunded by the company.

So ....... OH drove down to find this store and buy the glue!

Ah well!

off for a mooch around

Afternoon all

Five second burst of chatter - its got that busy again - loads of little bitty things.

Sunny but chilly here - wouldn't mid the afternoon drive with Evelyn - Go girl sing your heart out. F-in-L had to give up driving a couple of years ago due to eyesight problems - he hated it & still does that he has lost his independance.

He was told not to drive at all, so we were going to sell the car - & his wife said "why not keep the car anyway & we can just use it to drive to the shops instead - thats not really driving, so it won't hurt, i can tell you if something is ahead of you or when to turn the corner"

I just looked so horrified & my OH was stuck for words. Should of heard what my F-in-L said - unrepeatable on here though.

Oh well it takes all sorts

Hey hey it's tersdy (here anyhow)
80 yr old mm getting very close to lack of reflex when driving but drive until you think it's time to quit. with that said it is very hard for those that have made it their only will in life and the having to step down from driving would be hard, I think that I would have a little of that problem when it would be time to step down and be driven around, I reckon I would be a pain in the unspeakable manner.

Here where I live is a 97yr old dairy farmer who is very Italian and refuses to give the wheel up his family do not encourage him they think it's a joke and went and bought him a Mercedes bloody Benz brand spanker at that, that in my book is ludicrous in any ones thoughts. He told me that he will not drive it as it is too modern for him so the family use it.
Just as well because his farm ute is full of dents from his driving, he just laughs about it saying things like "i forgot to take it out of gear or didnt put the brake on". So I really cannot imagine how he will feel when he cannot drive anymore.

Evelyn was that you I past in a flash on the Coast road, I looked in the rear view mirror and there you where head going from one side to the other singing with out a care in the world, Zoom Zoom Zoom.

I didn't watch the rescue but those that survive any natural disaster with the help of professional rescuers are very lucky people and to me shows that their time was not up yet.

Just yesterday a truck got out of control going down the steep decent at the end of the freeway heading into Adelaide, Brakes alight missed the arrestor bed so as he could stop( its a very deep sand patch for vehicles that get out of control). he could not get over to approach it because the traffic was in the way. As he came around the big bend there was another broken down truck right in his way and a car where the driver was changing a flat tyre. He swerved but hit the truck and took out the bus stop wrecking his truck to a tangled mess, the driver of the broken down truck was in the bus shelter and was killed instantly and the person changing his tyre had his legs cut off, the driver of the out of control truck is still in hospital in a very serious condition.
Just goes to show when a catastrophe like this happens it gets worse as it proceeds. I have seen some pretty bad accidents in my life time but not like this. I cannot imagine what would have happened if he had got to the very busy intersection of 6 ways of traffic a half a mile further on it would have been worse with all the vehicles waiting there.
But one thing that stuck me very odd was - why the heck was that person changing a tyre on the freeway - seems that, that was an accident ready to happen and primed the situation.

ok nuff said

Wayno
