i have been unable to find my dads birth cert but think this might be due to him being in hospital as soon as born with severe eczema all over his body i think he also contracted pneumonia i seem to remember him telling me he was in hospital for years,,would this be why there is no birth cert? if so where would i look?

His birth should still have been registered, even if he was in hospital after birth. Would you like to post some details and maybe someone can find him.

If you have just looked in the GRO main indexes try contacting the local register office and ask them to do a search for you.

On rare occasions the administration process can break down and the information from the local register office doesn't make it into the GRO main index.

I am also having this problem. Can't locate a registration of birth for my fathers oldest sister. I have her date of birth from baptism records from the church where her parents were married ( the year before), and dates of birth for her two youger brothers. I have got certs for all of them except her, and I have tried all the smaller reg offices in the Liverpool area, and even the GRO in Southport. It has been said that she was brought up in Ireland by an aunt, but surely her birth would have been registered?I don't know what else to try.

have you tried looking for a birth as (surname) + forename = male.

This should work in either freebmd or lancsbmd

they may have been too worried about his heath to agree on a name before registration or as I think was the case with my own gt grandfather, the registrar appeared in the hospital before they had time to think about it

I had a problem looking for my dad's birth. I was sent on a wild goose chase because of made up names on it that didn't tally with rest of family. On his birth cert it says who his father is and given surname but his mother's maiden name is down as Palmer and so was his older brother. His younger brother and sister were down with mother's maiden name of Day. The next brother in Line had mother's maiden name of Cotton. The last two sons born had the correct name of Pickin.
For the first few weeks of family tree searching I thought I was from the Palmer family. Not until I got all their certs together did I realize what was wrong.

I don't know why she did this and they all have the same father. We have put it down to a drunken father registering the births and wetting the babies head too many times.

I suppose you can put what you like on the certificates. Just makes searching more difficult ,but fun

Tracey,

Are you trying to find his brothers too?

Unlike the others, Brian was born in Lancashire, probably because of the war.

I have PM'd Tracey with possible marriages and children for the brothers in England (I'm talking about the Rigg/Clarke ones). I PM'd as they are all probably living people. This is just for reference so that nobody spends time duplicating as I know how frustrating that can be.
