Very useful information everyone. Yes, I am on a gold 6 mo. membership. I will see what happens when I join again. I have really appreciated all the help this site provides and the great people who provide it so willingly.

As Evelyn is on Gold membership, I suspect that she is on a 6 month GR subscription anyway so if she returned to GR standard it will only be for 6 months anyway.

What you pay matters not that you are on continuous membership. If you are a long standing member who pays £9.95 per year, then as long as you renew within 28 days you keep your annual subscription.

Continuous membership simply means that GR will debit your specified payment method automatically, so long as it is still valid i.e. your card has not expired. Continuous membership has absolutely nothing to do with the fee rate or renewal period of your subscription.

If for whatever reason you loose your annual membership, then you can only subscribe for six months, currently charged at £9,95.

I joined for a year when I first joined, and it has been continuous since then - they take the money each year

Evelyn, I get the impression that, while Ancestry quotes costs for 1 month or 3 months or 1 year they actually charge take the money for a full year. I could be wrong about that as I have never subscribed but perhaps somebody else can tell us. If it was possible to pay for just one month I would consider subscribing for 1 month, but cant afford the cost for a whole year. I have on a couple of occasions had a free 14 day trial.

Gai.
Us older members only had a 1 year sub. 6 months wasnt available.

When I joined in 2004 I paid £6.95 for 1 year. It changed to 6 months when new owners took over. However my last price was £9 95 for 1 year. I am on continuous membership which does make a difference

It will be interesting to see how much I will pay in June when renewal time comes up

Hi Liz, when I first joined genes in May last year all they offered was 6 months membership there was no 12 months membership option. When did they offer 12 months membership?

Bobtanian Report 11 Apr 2010 00:15

IF you are a current standard member paying only £9.95 per year, on your return the cost will be £9.95 per six months.....at present prices...

If you leave GR and renew at a later date, I believe you can only have 6 months membership and cannot renew for a year again - I may be wrong, but if so, another member will correct me.

Hover on Family tree, top left then click Gedcoms. Follow the instructions for exporting your file. It will be sent to your registered email as an attachment within a few minutes or so after processing.

LadyinRed

How do you make a gedcom file of your genes tree?

From basic computer user/newbee

Evelyn, as a belt & braces approach I think that if I were you I would make a gedcom file of my tree just to have as a back up for anything that might go wrong in the future

Thanks to all for this information. I am going to downgrade for a few months as things are getting busy and I need to take a break. Must say that the members are very helpful on this site and I've gained a lot by my participation. I am still searching for an elusive ancestor and will get into that as well later on. Many thanks to all for the help you have given me.

Gai sums it up correctly. You don't loose your tree - however you can no longer initiate messages or post on the boards. What happens it that you revert to being a Free Member.

Free Members may:

* (a) use the free facilities available on the Genes Reunited Service to add all or part of their family tree;
* (b) search for individuals using criteria specified by the Genes Reunited Service;
* (c) receive email messages sent by Standard and Gold Members. These will be sent to your registered email address and can be viewed in the Message Centre on the Genes Reunited Service.

(ii) Non-Core Service Use and Benefits for Free Members.

Free Members may also:

* (a) upload photographs and videos. If any photograph or video contains the image of a living person, the member uploading it must obtain the prior consent of that person to the photograph or video appearing on the Genes Reunited Service; and
* (b) opt to receive our newsletter or personalised notification emails relating to individuals listed in the Genes Reunited Service or in census records which appear to be a reasonably close match to people included in your family tree.

Hi Evelyn,
I had a gold membership which ran out in January while I was on holidays and on my return I started a new job so I deliberately let the membership expire.

Nothing happened to my tree, it is still there intact but what I couldn't do was a relative had entered more names on their tree and I was unable to view their tree even though they had given me access previously.

I could read the community boards but couldn't reply to anything written on them. I had a couple of PM's which I could respond to but I couldn't initiate any messages say from a Hot Match. This week I rejoined with just the standard membership so I can see what new names is on my relatives tree and so I can use the boards.

Hi Evelyn

I don't think we've spoken before, extends hand of friendship, hi I'm Shimms.

I discontinued, left the boards for a while only to return to discover that my tree had been lost forever. May have been a one-off but it may be worth downloading your tree onto a disc if you decide to discontinue for a while.

Mine's all the sadder as it's a maze of brick walls and certain bricks had been removed with the help of fabulous friends here.

xxx Shimms xxx

edit

I managed to get my messages back.

Don't know the first part.

Re: "By the way, how does one go about downgrading the subscription?"

Go to My Account - the link is above the usual selection bar at top right - it will say:

My membership and payment details

You are currently ************* member

You joined the site on the *******************

Your paid membership expires on the ******************

My membership type:
x Continuous membership
Single membership

Continuous membership means we will continue your membership for you automatically, but we will email you in advance to notify you.If you choose single membership, we will let you know when your paid membership expires. To update your membership type, select from the options above and click save.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Just change your membership type to single, and don't renew when they send you a renewal reminder - or maybe don't renew as a gold but as a standard member.

Just read a lot of the posts about ancestry vs. Genes and will subscribe to Ancestry and get the lower level of Genes (if I can figure out how to downgrade from the gold!!)
